i got a digital temp gauge that flashed at a specied temp. So what is normal opperation temp and what should be a good warning temp. i am taking the car to the track so a little warning would nice to not blow this thing up, since it is 100+ out here.

holy smoke i figured this would be an easy one. well i set it for 242 thinking that gives me a little warning.

 

Uh? 242 is an odd number, why not 240 or 250? You do realize at that temperature the engine would already be overheated and more than likely warped.

Every time you shut your FD down on a hot day (90+) the temp goes that high or higher. Though I would let it idle down before running it hard.

A good temp would be 85-90. but with twins and stock hood 105 is not uncommon.

 

I don't know what others might see on a hot day at the track, but maybe this will help...

Also notice that none of the ambient temps are all that "hot", so your results may vary.

 

Also FWIW, I have a Fluidyne radiator, "Fan Mod" and Miata Thermoswitch on an otherwise stock R1 (dual oil coolers). My guage sensor is mounted on the throttle- body coolant line. 50/50 coolant/water ratio and Stock thermostat.

The other day it hit 105 deg. F. where I live, so I was paying pretty close attention to my aftermarket guage (Defi "D" Series, which I think is fairly accurate?).

IIRC, sitting or driving slow through the neighborhood I was hitting btwn 195-205. Driving hard, like a quick WOT through a couple of gears on a freeway on-ramp it would shoot to about 215 F. but drop quickly back to 195-200 after I began cruising. It never went beyond 215-220 deg. F., but then that's not exactly extended hard driving.

Also, I'm an old guy, this was with the AC on full.

Well drive your car around at 250 degrees and see how long it last. There is a difference between having water temps running 250 all the time and having a reading that says 250 after a few minutes of heat soak.

I have basically the same setup. I see 190 on a hot day cruising around town stop and go with the fan mod on. 190-200 on the freeway cruising in hot weather. My temps may shoot up to 210 if I'm in the same hot weather driving it hard for extended periods of time. Otherwise fair weather I'm right at 180-185.
