This is only a couple months worth of rust. It looks bad, but doesn't seem to have penetrated too deep. Like an idiot I didn't coat it after cleaning.



What say you?

Well, I emory'd it down and although it's smooth to the touch, you can still see where the rust was. I'm afraid to do much more. Oh well, it was a spare, but maybe I'll learn my lesson from it.

 

Wet a strip of 400 wet or dry silicone carbide paper with light oil or WD-40 and saw it with a long leather boot lace wrapped around it two or three times.



So the paper has to be cut into strips about the same width as the bearings.



The right amount of pressure and the right amount of oil and you can save anything. The journals are induction hardened so you cannot remove too much.

I do this to all cranks. Use a diamond file to remove any burrs or sharp edges.



Wash out completely when finished.
