Hey everyone,

I want to start by saying how much I love my RX8 and how epic it is to own and drive. That being said, I sometimes experience the strangest problems/incidents that happen once or twice and then never again.

Does anyone else experience these anomalies?

And can anyone help me figure out what the hell happened last night during its most recent episode.

Here's how it went down. (this all happens in the span of about 15 seconds or less)

I was driving (aggressively) last night, I was in traffic maybe going 30 mph in second gear. I saw an opening in traffic and I punched it. I wound up the RPM's to around 7 and shifted in to third. I let the clutch out and gave it just a touch of gas and BAM!!! She starts going faster than the amount of gas I was giving it, so I back off the throttle. the RPM's AND CAR KEEP GOING!!! I take my foot all the way off of the gas and depress the clutch. The RPM's keep going and hit the limiter! The engine keeps revving and the tachometer keeps bouncing off of the rev limiter!!! I pull over quickly and make sure the throttle isnt stuck. - all the while the car is still revving and bouncing off the rev limiter between 8 and a half and 10 RPM -. I see that the throttle isn't stuck; confused and scared the engine might blow I just turn it off.

I start it up less than five minutes later after a brief visual inspection and it seems fine.

I drove it home and to work this morning and everything was normal.

The car is stock, regularly serviced and only has 41k on the clock. I was driving for about 30 minutes before the incident and it was about 45 degrees out when it happened.

Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? Or if I have done any lasting damage?

Thanks for your help

Cheers

H

i am a mazda tech and i have seen alot of little oddities happen to rx-8s but a stuck w.o.t. takes the cake from what i have seen. the throttle is drive by wire and mazda has had some issues in the past with throttle bodies ( mazda 6 anybody ) before. i sugest taking the car to your local mazda dealer and having them scan for pending codes and take a close look at the cars mode 6 data. you could have a serious issue that has not totaly failed yet.

I agree, get it looked at ASAP... There could have EASILY been a very bad accident resulting from that.

Yea that's pretty scary, just be glad you were rolling on the freeway and not siting in traffic.

Seems odd, Wouldn't the plentum slam shut even if the cable to the pedal broke or bound causing the engine to stall out? If both the cable and spring back safety failed it surely wouldn't run fer **** after that.

Or a Ferrari, Lambo, Lotus, Aston Martin, Koniggsegg, etc.

Or just about any other car - supercar or not - built after 2007.

Oh, don't forget the F-16, F-18, F-22 and every Airbus and most Boings.

You can't stop the future. DBW is WAY better than a cable in every conceivable manner.

It kind-of sounds like your throttle plate got iced up and stuck in the open position.

Getting it looked at is a good thing....
