I don't own an RX-8, never have, but I've always wanted one and I've just about had it with my VW Passat 1.8t. While it sounds like no fun at all to drop $32k on a brand-new RX-8, I'm trying not to be once-bitten-twice-shy about buying used again, and I was wondering if there were any unique issues that needed to be kept in mind when checking out what's for sale in the back lot. The only issue I know about is the Wankel's perennial sensitivity to oil starvation, since they never did figure out how to make apex seals with oil ports that could apply and scavenge a recirculating oil supply, so...well actually, I don't know how to check for that, I just know it's a possible problem. Got any pointers?

good question! the rx8 is actually just like koby said it would be, simple and reliable, it takes a mechanic to make it troublesome, like the older rotaries... that being said here are some of the issues we've run into around here.



1. go to the dealer and make sure the info they have about that VIN# matches the car. we've seen a couple that were stolen and vin swapped.



2. depending on the build date they have had several upgrades. these upgrade were available for the cars that had problems/complaints, so you're checking to see whats been done. the one that is nice to have is the faster starter, which was factory installed sometime in 2006. there have been a zillion PCM updates, so you do want the latest one.



3. problems; the main cats like to plug up/fail, as always, cats live a hard life behind a rotary. it got checked in 2007 during the recall. an aftermarket cat is going to die much much faster. the coils are also weak. they are cheap ($25) and easy to change though, so its not a big deal, and unlike the VW its not a surprise you're stranded, the -8 coils just get weak and the check engine light comes on.



4. engines. around here they are trouble free. i worked at the dealership from 2005-2007 and we changed 1, for a coolant leak (they had a small run of bad machining, all gone now), after i left i don't think that changed. this is much better than the average. its average at the dealership under warranty to rebuild a few engines/transmissions etc etc.



as far as options and things that is pretty basic, and its up to you. in real life these cars are FUN, they are direct, handle amazingly well while being easy to drive, and without having any vices, the back seat is actually handy. it doesn't deliver V8 style power, you have to work, but the car is fast enough to be fun without being big trouble like 100 in a 25 zone like the FD is.



mileage isnt so hot though, its a heavy car. also its pretty well tuned as is, so getting more hp out of it isnt easy or cheap
