so why is it that the auto is rated at so much less hp and peak power than the 6 speed?

rfreeman27 07-31-2003 08:37 PM

they de tuned it.

wonderin whether or not the mazda numbers were generated ..

without havin considered actual hp with stateside emissions controls ...

Mazda needs to stop being half assed about rotary powered cars. The rx8 needed a NA 3 rotor.

I agree 100% it is sad that they do not put out a real monster.

I will say it again. Mazda proposed to squeeze another 90 HP out of a 13B n/a block. With bigger exhaust ports??? No way!! The **** is going to hit the fan on this one just like the Maita'a and the older Cobras. You'll see.

I wanted one until I heard they were 40 HP shy of 250.

This sucks! This will kill the cars sales I am sure. I know I no longer want one.

Yeah I was wondering what magic trick they were trying to pull in order to get 90 more horsepower out of a NA 2 rotor. I agree with you Jim, the **** is going to hit the fan when people realize the power is damn near 50 horses lower than advertised. I am not a huge fan of the rx8 to begin with, but I did like the whole concept and the new engine design. However now that the engine isn't all it was built up to be, it really takes away from the big picture. Mazda produced the cosmo 3 rotor, what is keeping them from doing something similar? Or even going with more displacement on a 2 rotor, like a 14 or 15b? The 13b is old news, its been around for years and its become obvious there is only so much power you can squeze out of it no matter what porting, exhaust, timing configurations you have.

Ha ha ha. You guys thought I was serious? I just reverse engineered the numbers. In reality it probably has about 12% loss. Rotaries have less than piston engines after all. Most FD's I've seen have about a 12% (or pretty close to it) loss when bone stock so the RX8 is probably no different.

I wondered if you were joking, figured you were.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png yall need to quick being suck pessimists about this whole thing! JACKASSES, ALL OF YOU ARE. take a hint from rx8forum guys, they at least back up their banter of the RX-8 with good hard data and explainations supported by an engineering background.

everyone here is just pulling at straws, especially 94touring.

1. mazda would not risk losing so much money on something like lying about HP numbers in thier new premeir sports car. they know people would put their car on dynos, and they know they will check the hp and torque curves themselves. lying about something as major as 40 hp would kill the RX-8, kill the future of rotaries, and kill the reputation of mazda. something like this could KILL mazda, they wouldn't do it.

2. is it that hard to believe they are getting that much more power out of a 1.3L NA? lets see, they changed the exhaust ports, made 3 different sets of intake port open at varying times, and increased the readline from 8K to 9K over the last NA (FC S5). it doesn't seem all that surprising to me. if honda can do it with an s2000 and get 250 hp out of 2L, is it hard to believe that mazda can get 250 hp out of a 1.3 L two stroke engine? nope, not that hard.

dude did you read the rx8 forum threads? they are just hoping theres some break in map or something, the only way to figure it out is to look at the car, and they are just pontificating

mike

yes, but they have good reasoning and thought to back up their theories
