Id love to put a Series 5 turbo 2 on my Karman Ghia.

A friend of mine had an old beatle with a 13B in it. It was a nice car, and pretty fast. I don't know if he still has it, but maybe I'll go see and sneak some pics.

My kit car has a '74 VW pan(much modified), so I can probable tell you just about anything you want to know about VW to TurboII installation(been there,done that.) Kennedy Engineered is a great source of info, as they have done this a lot and sell the custom parts. I'm on just about a first name($$$$) bases with all of the auto supply companies that provide parts for this swap. I've also got a 70s mag. with a story on the first VW/rotary swap(done by racing beat.)

Cool thanks. Right now, im just testing the waters, to see what people have experienced doing the swap, as far as performance, ease of swap, ease of working on the engine, how streetable it is and so forth.

Right now my main concerns are to keep the rx7 running and finish off my beetle. So by the end of this year, ill know if ill be sticking wankel in the ghia or stick to a vw power plant. And after finishing the beetle. Cost will be at the top of my list.

Well, lot me know if you need help, as I think I've run into just about every problem there is with this project. It was not easy or cheap to do. I had to custom machine a lot of parts(lucky I have access to a milling machine and lathe, and the Boeing aircraft surplus store(for alum.) is only 45min away. Check out Kennedy Engineered web site, their catalog is worth the price. They have done this swap a lot over the years.

if im not mistaken, Racing beat had something in their catalogs about this...lemme check. yea, in their old catalog that i have they have a Rotary-to-VW Transaxle with Flywheel...=)

Hi Treceb, wooffinn here. Had a friend a few years back fit a 12A into his beetle. The engine/box system was relatively easy[but he did recommend to fabricate a rear mount for the motor]. The main problem was cooling of both the oil and the coolant. We mounted a Mazda oil cooler at the rear[the engine bay door was slightly ajar but it was the only spot where it worked!] and fabricated a Rx-4 radiator in the front spare wheel bay. We made some air ducting to suit and run some metal pipes up the tunnel with flexible hoses each end. It took a while but the end result was sensational with some ' what da??' looks at the traffic lights.

I do a few conversions at work of various degrees from very easy to near impossible but remember any engine conversion will have its difficulties be it big or small. Just one thing to remember though that I see too often, remember to upgrade other important systems in your car. What year is that Ghia?



VW used swingaxles on them until 1969 and if you get too crazy with the rotary you'll spin the swingaxle right off the diff.



I know, I did it about 3 times with a bug we had, tooo much power for that little tranny.



The independant rear takes a lot more of a beating...or you could stick a bus tranny in it with some work
