Ok so I've been weighing the options for my motor swap in my S13 and I refuse to be of the norm. Most would go SR20DET, others dare to go RB series, and even further some just build up their KA. But I myself I've driven numerous generations of RX7s and I feel the need to attempt not a 13b or 16b....but a 20b. Now naturally as it seems people look at me like I'm a complete fool but i think otherwise. Unfortunately for myself I must admit being on this website of no pistons that I seem to have only piston knowledge with enough rotary knowledge to barely hurt myself with.

This is where my questions come into play.

1. Good resources for me to learn about rotaries

2. Suggestions for my intended swap this winter

3. Suggestions for the dash board since I intend to keep the gauge cluster of an RX7

4. And anything else you think could aid me

Thank you to anyone who reads this post and a huge thank you to anyone who can spare the time to assist me

Alrighty, lots of information available out there, first off the history of the RX-7 and different engines (there is no 16b rotary, only a 16x which hasn't been released http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=183733, and the 20b is merely a 3-rotor 2.0L displacement version of a 2-rotor 13B (found in RX-7's from 1986-2002 in many different configurations). Up from there was a rare 26B 4-rotor designed and used by the Mazda LeMans car to win the 24 hour event, but rotaries were then banned from competition.

so for 1)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_RX-7 It is Wikipedia, but there is some good information there

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunos_Cosmo <--- this is the Mazda Cosmo, the 4th generation was the vehicle in which the 20B came from, stock with twin-turbo

2)

http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=370451 <--- this is a GREAT FAQ/links page on 20B, the whole 20b forum has some good pages

http://fc3spro.com/TECH/SWAP/COSMO/20b.html (there is a lot of good information on the fc3spro.com website for all rotaries)

http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=767031 <--- the OP of this thread put a 20B into a 240, definitely be worth giving him a shout.

3) I would give that S14.3BRE guy from RX7club a shout about dash, but seeing as you will almost have to run an aftermarket EMS, you could likely retain the stock computer to handle all the other non-engine functions, including your dash, the speedo will have to be adapted somehow for a 13B transmission, and I would certainly suggest a plethora of aftermarket gauges to keep an eye on that sucker. If you opt to go with an EMS like the AEM, or Motec, they both have options I believe for aftermarket dashes, and there is always the option of using an FC/FD gauge cluster.

4) just READ READ READ!!! RX7club has many members that have been through all kinds of routes of 20B, the Nopistons 20b section https://www.nopistons.com/forums/20B-Forum-f76.html also has some invaluable information. Get on every rotary forum board you can find and become very acquainted with the Search button. Any time you are looking for specific information, you will be greeted much more kindly if you show that you have already taken the step to search it out.

Anyways, the only other thing you will need for the swap is mucho dinero $$$, multiple cases of coffee and/or Red Bull, no desire to sleep and full desire to bleed, sweat and cry.

any more details on that car?

defprun 01-02-2009 06:33 PM

The only problem i see is that you can get a used rotary around here, 13b-re for like 1300 bux with the wiring harness and 5 speed tranny, 13b-rew for about 1500$, 13bT for like 900-1450$ but a 20b is 3000-4000$ consistently...

20b is ******* sick though and I would **** my pants if I saw a s14 or s13 with a 20b in it!

defprun 01-02-2009 06:34 PM

And it sure beats a Type-R motor and those go for 4-5k too...and dont come close to the sexy that a 20b is...
