I'd like to put some EGT probes in my exhaust, it's just a stock port 12a (IT motor). I've heard 1", 12", 16", does it matter? any other opinions?

I would say close, exhaust would be cooling down the whole time it's in the pipe. The colder the ambient temperature and the faster you're going the more it would cool down.

It's kind of like swapping dyno numbers. As long as you're not melting probes it doesn't matter a whole lot to an extent. You want it close enough to get a true reading. But your numbers at 6" will be different than the other guy that has his at 12" if the engines are built and tuned identically. If you're going to rely on one guy for tuning assistance go with what he suggests. Otherwise take probe location into consideration when anyone tells you "this is the EGT you're shooting for".

I understand this, once installed I'll be going to the dyno and tuning with A/F to determine the proper EGT. I guess my question is where won't melt the probes? Like Tyson said, I don't want ambient conditions to affect my readings, but will the turbulence directly after the exhaust port affect readings if the probes are too close? I'm not trying to compare numbers here, just looking for the placement that will get me the most consistently accurate readings. |
