hey everybody
So what's the deal with these things? Do they completely replace the metal oil rings, or do they between the spring and the old metal one? Or should I just spend the $200 on new metal o rings? Sorry, but I'm a little confused on this subject. Oh yeah, forgot to add- I'm rebuilding my 79 12a engine with 130,000 miles on it. Currently, I have the Atkins Rotary rotor rebuild kit, which contains: 8 viton o rings apex seals and springs corner seals and springs (thinking of getting 93-95 springs instead) side seal springs front and rear main seal pilot bearing and seal What else do you guys recomend? This is my first actual rebuild, but I did take apart a junk 12A a little while ago, so I have some idea of what to expect. I just gotta be more careful this time https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png thanks |
the viton rings go into and around the metal oil control rings depending on wich one you are looking at (big or small ring) and as far as the deal with them the vitons hold up much better to heat as well as alcohal fuels and some oils and a plus is there less expencive depending on where you get them.

ok thanks

Viton, like all of the materials developed by IE Dupont (Note the two nonsense words stuck together to form the product name) Nylon, Teflon, Delrin, ETC. A seal made for high temps. These two seals, seal the oil scraper rings to the rotor. The scraper rings keep the oil passing through the rotor falling into the center drainback hole (in the center iron) and prevent it from getting involved in the combustion process. If both "O" rings on one side of a rotor fail, the engine will smoke like crazy. Each oil scraper ring has one of these seals in it. The seals ar not substitutes for the scraper rings. Lynn E. Am I the only one that noticed that the Viton o-rings fit like absolute ****.
They also dont seem to be very "springy" once you do get them installed becuse they are binding so bad. How can something that is that out of spec be a good thing? |

How can something that is that out of spec be a good thing? I have lost one set of stock "O" rings since 1980. And that time was my fault. Used rings from a junk engine that I know had been overheated. And they lasted two seasons before they gave up. What's wrong with stock rings? Lynn E. Hanover |
Nothing

only time ive had a problem with those is when the engine is super old guy, 211,000miles, engine looked brand new on the inside too

Theproblem with the Atkins Viton seals is that they are measured in American, and Mazda uses a Metric measurement for the seals. So yes they fit like ****. the outer one is too small and is easy to cut when putting it on and the inner ones are too big and bunch in the scraper rings.
Nylon was created symultaniously by two Dupont chemical plants. One in New York and one in London. Hense the name NY Lon. I work with Dupont *Invidia now, so I know this is fact. |
