What are you going to put it in? I'm trying to get ideas for my 12A. Hmm, lawn mower? Heh, anything's possible I guess.

Formula SAE actually, I was just brainstorming...
When that 4-rotor Scoot vid was posted, someone mentioned that they (being Scoot) had a pretty powerful single-rotor car...I thought it would be cool to tinker with. I've never built/taken apart a rotary, but a single rotor sounds pretty simple! |
Some older snowmobiles had single rotor engines. As mentioned, atkins makes one.

So I read the Formula SAE rules really well: "The engine must be a 4 stroke piston engine."

single rotor?!?!? ive heard of 3 and 4 rotor but never a single rotor, wouldnt that be like a 2 stroke? i got my motor from atkins and its treated me good so if they have one and you really want it hit them up. that would be sewwt if you built one though, a litlle over a half a liter of displacement and it actually pushes around a car (may it be a lightweight sports car) but still thats pretty good. i want to hear more if you get it. keep up posted! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

One of the very first rotary cars ever produced by NSU was a single rotor. I forget what it was called.

NSU Wankel Spider 1964-1967 NSU road tested the Wankel in 1960 for the first time. Later that year they showed a preliminary version of the Spider, a descendant of the Sport Prinz at a Munich meeting of German engineers. Wankel spoke to the conference and won over the many skeptics in the audience. Displacement 1 x 497 cc Horsepower 50 bhp @ 5000 rpm, 54 bhp @ 6000 rpm Torque 52 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm, 54 @ 3000, 57 @ 3500 rpm Top Speed 95 mph The Spider competed with the Austin Healey Sprite, which had 5 more horses, but the same top speed. It was about 4 % more expensive than the Austin and 16 % more expensive than the Fiat 850 Spider. About 2375 were produced, although figures of 3000 and 5000 have been reported. wow, thats pretty cool. maybe mazda should start putting those in jet skis and such to compete with all the honda crap. that would be cool to have a rotary powered jet ski or motorcycle.

Didn't the suzuki and norton motorcycles have single rotary engines too?

single rotor engines, the ones in bikes and such, had a tendency to blow themselves apart due to a bad imbalance, thats why 2 rotors are smoother, better balanced.
but i think pettit has a single rotor with 2-300hp or something, one of the big companies has a powerful single rotor. kevin. |
IIRC when i was doing my research on FSAE engines (i ran into the same idea and then shortly after re-read the rules as you did) back in the 70s there were a few single rotor powered FSAE cars, but they tended to kick too much ass due to their good power to weight ratio and were outlawed.
I still think it would be a cool idea... |

If you could build it right wow.. using the front and rear plate you'd have both big secondary ports that you could bridge port and you'd have a very short e-shaft with no flex and bearings on both sides of the rotor.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png can we say 15k + rpms.. and then do a p-port on it too.. whoo hoo.. Idle'd be aound 2k to keep it running, but who'd care with that kind of redline...

My engine builder(business partner https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR ) has a single rotor he started working on. I'll try to get pics. The E-shaft as at the machinist right now. He was gonna build a go-cart to put it on.

single rotary engine would be sweet in a SAE car. but hte ultimate would be a 2 stroke 250CC or smaller.
But SAE doesn't allow such nonsense We use a Suzuki DRZ400 motocross engine. It is a single cylinder 4 stroke |
