I bought a pair of S5 NA Rotors of a member on this forum and there is some damage I'm worried about. I'm no expert on internals, but it seems the motor may have lost an apex seal. Maybe they got damaged during shipping...maybe both. Some of the side seals are still in the grooves, but not the entire seal. Most of them are only pieces. The rotor faces look alright, but I can't be sure until I clean them. What concerns me is the edge damage. On the main edges and the edges of the apex seal grooves, there are assorted nicks and dents. How do I find if these rotors are usable? Can they be filed down to a nice straight edge? It seems to me that this is possible on the main side edges, but the grooves would be more sensative to clearences. I haven't made a detailed inspection yet, but it looks so far that the groove damage is only on the top edge and not inside the groove. Could the edge be filed, leaving the inner part of the groove alone to keep the clearance? I will be extremely pissed if these rotors are unusable because the guy took 2 months to ship, and now I have to deal with him again if they are trash.

I will work on cleaning them and getting some pics. It'll take a few days cause I don't have a digital camera. I'll have to borrow one or use a reg cam and get it put on cd. In the meantime - in general, how sensative are they to damage? I took another look at them, the side edges look repairable - just file/grind down to make it flush with the rest. The apex grooves I'm worried about....but we will see how they look after a cleaning.

the problem is , diffrent peopel have a diffrent opinion what is fine and what is not. you have to make the decision if its worth fixing and if the part will operate properly. so pics will be better to help others judge what u think is usable or not

ALL grooves should be within spec.

If damage is close to a groove (i.e. side seal groove, apex seal groove, etc.), make sure you check the groove clearances - i.e. no binding!



Generally, damage to the rotor face is OK.

Since you're going NA, this is a no brainer.

Turbo'd engines might want to be careful with pits and damage with sharp edges, as it promotes pre-ignition.

Watch out for grooves at the apexs of rotors. These is a BAD ROTOR but the arrows point to a groove that i'm talking. The depth of the groove is important. if it no deeper then 1.5mm. and no wider then 2.25 mm then the rotor is useable. if its any bigger it will beat up on the part of the apex seal that is not lazer treated eventually breaking the seal at that point.
