So since I got my built engine back from (we'll keep their name unknown right now) a highly respected engine builder in the community. It smoked...

It smoked for the first couple days obviously but then a few weeks later, there was still a little smoke on startup. Well, I dont drive my rx7 every day, maybe 2 times a week or so. Just recently however summer has hit and I've been driving it a lot more. Thing is, now it smokes pretty bad on start up... after it warms up there is no smoke. Today I took out the spark plugs and, as my head dropped, i noticed a little big of oil in the read housing plug holes.

Needless to say Im pretty upset about it, considering I've put maybe 3500 miles on the engine. One problem with the warranty though, is that it has been like 2 months past the year. I'm going to call them anyways to see what they say, but shipping will be pricey ... atleast 300. Is it worth the shipping/waiting, or should i just break it down and do it myself? I really dont have the time to build another engine right now, so it would take awhile to finish and I dont want that. :(

Anyone know any little tricks to fix it without breaking down the entire engine?

I thought for awhile maybe my OMP was leaking after the car sat for awhile, but alas, wishful thinking. :(

by the way, this is the engine that was built for 30psi +, its highly modified ...

nothing huh? :-/

where did all the engine builders go off to? I thought we had a few here... :(

GreyGT-C 05-01-2005 12:57 AM

personally, i'd tear it down myself and have a look at it. There isn't a quick fix for it without tearing it down that i know of...

KingFD 05-01-2005 04:20 AM

Oh man that sux. Sorry to hear that. I'd go with the pulling it down yourself. See what they have to say.

j9fd3s 05-01-2005 11:07 AM

yeah just pull it apart. you get to find out if "highly modified" is the same thing as used...

I would go ahead and contact the engine builder, first. Tell them the whole story and see how they respond. It has been awhile since you purchased the engine work so you may not get the answer you are looking for. It would've been advisable to do it much sooner but I unders tand that you don't drive the car much.

If they don't go for it, then tear it apart yourself. It'll give you an opportunity to inspect their work, see how everything was done, and find the fault.

I've got one engine out there that I did a year ago that's smoking. The driver is in the same situation you are in. I don't think I loused an ything up, but I very well may have. He saw oil on the rear plug, too. His problems have been symptomatic of oil burning since he got the engi ne. I'm having him send it back for me to re-do. If there's an assembly problem, I am doing the labour for free.

Yeah ... thats kinda what i figured I'd have to end up doing. :(

I havent heard anything back to the company yet, and I certainly do want to take a look inside to see if he really did do everything I wanted. Only problem is right now my garage is occupied with a bunch of ****, so I dont have room to tear it down and I'm leaving the country soon, so I dont have much time either. Damn these rx7's... lol

I'm buying a beamer... :-p

But I'll tear it down soon im sure, and I will take pictures ... if its all fuckered up I'll be sure to let everyone know the experience with this place. That will add another notch to their negative response list.

how much smoke is at start up ? Just curious to see, I am aware that these cars will smoke a little at startup just due to the OMP tossing some extra oil to lube the apex seals before initial start. I get a puff of smoke when I start up in the morning, but usually thats the only time throughout the whole day that it'll smoke on start
