I'm planning on rebuilding my n/a. I checked with local dealers and they don't have any clue of what the hell i'm talkin bout. They say "well we have the gaskets and that's about it".....anyway anyone have advice on who i should get one from? or is the best price the way to go?

rxseven 06-19-2003 11:12 PM

for all oem stuff try mazdaformance.com. If you are on a budget, a basic rebuild kit from atkinsrotary will work great. They are nice people to deal with.

BigTurbo74 06-20-2003 12:37 AM

ok since my main goal is to do a t2 convo. i'm just gonna flake out and only get what is needed to keep my car running without smoke over 4k. So, what exactly does this mean? i need to get coolent and oil seals correct? anything else guys?

BigTurbo74 06-21-2003 02:05 AM

anyone?

rxseven 06-21-2003 06:29 PM

Most likely your oil seals are bad. You will need new oil o-rings and a gasket set. Both can be bought from atkins for less than $200.

BigTurbo74 06-21-2003 07:14 PM

coolent seals are needed also because when you rebuild they are ruined right? what do you mean by gasket set, between the housings and such?

rxseven 06-22-2003 09:58 AM

the gasket set will include all o-rings and external gaskets including the coolant seals. While you have the motor apart you should replace all the springs anyway because they are relatively cheap. But you could reuse the oil seal springs and apex seal springs if they are within spec. You ought to replace the side seal and corner seal springs as they flatten out quickly.

toddp31 06-22-2003 02:48 PM

Best to replace all the seals, better safe than sorry! Plus they really are not the expensive.

motoracer47 06-22-2003 03:01 PM

Were do all of you get your seals at? The best prices i have found for complete kits less apex seals is 5-600. Is there something im missing here, or are some people talking of partial kits? Ive seen the engine gasket set for 160, but that had no seals for the rotors at all. thanks, brad https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

rxseven 06-23-2003 11:29 AM

I am not sure what seals he meant. A full kit with new oil rings and all new hard seals, bearings is over $700. This may be cheap for some folks but too much for me.

This is Bruce Turrentines site, he did the rebuild video you buy at Atkins

phinsup 06-23-2003 11:39 AM

Yea I like Atkins, isamu bought the video and said it was well worth the cash.

banzaitoyota 06-23-2003 12:00 PM

The vid is good. I recommend it to everyone

BigTurbo74 06-27-2003 09:00 PM

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif ok, i finally got my engine opened. i'm gonna take some time to clean stuff up a bit but i really need help on what seals to get. i mean i don't have anything to compare mine too. it seems that a pair of my water seals have three bands to it? does this sound right? anyway there are pics you can peep in the 2nd gen sec. i will take some more pics of my seals layed out so i can show you my situation. i know i was burning oil but i'm not sure which seals were defective. oh yeah does anyone have the rebuild video i could borrow? i'm running short on loot since i have many parts to replace. anyone can hit me up on aim or pm. help would be greatly apprieciated!!!

BigTurbo74 06-29-2003 03:42 PM

ok i'm getting all new oil o-rings, coolant seals, and possibly springs if i have loot. but yeah if anyone can borrow out their rebuild video that would be awesome. i just checked and the video from atkins is like $40 shipped. thats bullshit

banzaitoyota 06-30-2003 10:56 AM

"i just checked and the video from atkins is like $40 shipped. thats bullshit "

Then don't buy it, and don't expect someone to bootleg it for you.

The Vid is VERY helpful and will save you far more than $40 in headaches and frustration

Baldy 06-30-2003 12:56 PM

quick question, somewhat off topic: can you get the video in DVD? like, for skipping to certain sections and what-not?

BigTurbo74 06-30-2003 02:49 PM

i'm saying though, what the hell happen the vid used to be like $20. WOW listen to how cheap i am.... but hey i'm trying to go fast so i guess it's gotta be like that

banzaitoyota 06-30-2003 03:11 PM

DVD, haven't seen that yet, would be nice

BigTurbo74 07-02-2003 03:14 AM

i decided to go the atkins route. good prices and reliable name. but i have a question. how can you tell if your rotors are non reusable? mine are very dirty, they have been soaking for a couple days and power washed to no avail.

What are you soaking them in? To get the carbon off you will need to soak them in carb cleaner or some sort of industrial degreaser. I had simular questions a few weeks ago. Check out that thread.

I HIGHTLY recommend "Purple Power" I got mine at Advance Auto Parts for around $3.00 a gallon (compared to Castrol Super Clean at $9.00 a gallon). Buy you a big bucket (large enough to put housings in) and soak everytying overnight. Then hit it with a pressure washer and it should look like new.

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 08:15 AM

I soaked mine overnite in Cold-Dip Carb Cleaner. Rised off in the parts washer and they are spotless

Is the one gallon can of that ChemDip stuff big enough to dip a rotor in?

How much is the 1 and 5 gallon buckets of it?

I could not find a place locally that sold it when I was looking for it.

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 10:44 AM

I gal can is not big enough. I didn't feel like ordering the 5 GL can. I bought 3 - 1GL cans and poured them in a 5 gal bucket.

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 10:45 AM

Autozone and Advanced Auto both stock it

BigTurbo74 07-04-2003 11:42 PM

Well i have had them soaking in carb cleaner for multiple days, i will check them again tomorrow, so the cleaner the better right? but they don't have to be BLINGIN right?

'CLP'................the ultimate carbon remover!

Don't know where U would get it, though. That's what we get carbon build-up out of M-16's with.

BigTurbo74 07-08-2003 01:06 AM

haha well i had them soak for a week and they are free of carbon buildup. but they sure don't bling,,, its all good i'm not a hotboy anyway
