Just wanted to hear from some people who have tried or have experience with porting into the oil control rings path. Thinking of porting 50% or less into it's path. Please if you don't have first hand experience don't respond. Pros and cons would be appreciated.

I typically go halfway in on the outer groove on the primary ports. No problems.

when they are new (theres a spec in the manuel) the oil control rings only seal on the inside little bit

I have not ported into the actual track of the outer scraper. I have seen it done, and was not impressed with the excess smoking that is produced. It is done in racing, where a little extra smoke is overlooked. In a fresh engine (fresh oil scrapers and springs) there is little to complain about. But after a bit of time on the engine, it becomes obvious that the blue RX-3 seems to have a smoking problem.



I asked a famous engine builder about this and he said it was not a problem. But I also think he was going well into the path of the outer ring, and almost to the line of the inner scraper. He was building streetported engines that are allowed to run 40MM venturies, that were as fast as bridgeported engines that can only run 38MM venturies.



I have a rotor that I cut open, and have installed a modified outer scraper ring, so I can scribe the actual track of the scraper lip. That way you can move the bowl or just radius and polish along the inner track without the smoking problem.



On the street, I think you would get over it within a week, if the cops don't find you first.



Anything done to the bowl shape that increases its volume, slows flow velocity, and increases the RPM where peak torque will live. The stock bowl shape is too deep in almost every case in stock irons.



I think if you just did the upper 3rd of the inner line, that exposure would be short enough to see the flow improvement with minimal smoking.





This is nothing but hearsay and speculation. The information may be worth exactly what it cost you.

Thanks for all the tips. Really appreciate it. Just fyi I'll be resurfacing the irons, maybe I'll take a few thousands off the oil control rings just to make sure they sit nice and flat.

does anyone know how far ito's porting template goes into the oil control rings

I don't know about ito's but the rb street port temp. (or bridge and j port) don't go inward at all.
