Hey

Gotta 90 turbo rx7. Only 300km on the rebuilt engine and its burning oil. My mechanic got the end plates ceramic/plasma coated and said it will cause less resistance for the seals. My question is this, will plasma/ceramic coating on the end plates cause problems for the seals to seat against the end plates? I have pics of the end plates ceramic/plasma coated if it will help. We lapped the end plates and made sure everything went on smooth and flat. Mechanic also said he heard bearing noise in the engine, like a knocking engine and said that can also cause oil burning. only other thing i can think of is the pcv not venting properly, turbo seals leakin which isnt hard to check, or the omp but i dont have engine light on.

Thanks

Couple of Questions.

When were the plates lapped? Before or after the coating process?

What lapping shop did you use?

What was the final Surface profile?

As long as there is enough rough area for oil to hang out in it is fine. When you have a very shiny surface there is no place for oil retention and that can actually cause more wear even if the surface is coated with oil and slippery/shiny.

the end plates were lapped, then coated then lapped again. the shop it went to was a aviation shop and coated at some local place around here. can i send u some pics banzaitoyota so you can see it?pm me your email address if you dont mind. and btw i talked to the mechanic he drained the oil and found copper shavings, so might be the engine bearing.with bearings in mind and racing beat which stationary gears and bearings would be a direct replacement for front and rear rotor?

Thanks

Ceramic coating and plasma heat coating are two different things.

Creamic is sprayed on and baked. Plasma is blasted on and penetrates into the material and cost about five times as much. Racing Beat Plasma coats their aluminum side housings.

They will do it to cast iron ones as well.
