This just arrived yesterday. I need some feedback on how useable this housing is? My instinct is that I do not want to put this in my rebuild, but would like to hear from the more experienced rebuilders.

The sellers description was

"It's in damn nice shape, no chatter marks, under an inch long of somewhere around a 1/16th inch chrome flaking, and the spark plug holes are perfect, no cracks."

Almost the entire outer edge of the chrome is marked and ready to follow in chipping off

Also the housing has been dropped. Can I get some feedback on how much that deformation is going to affect my water seal? It couldn't have happened in shipping because the housing's side that seals to the irons is painted. The paint is not chipped or show's any sign of damage. Why was it painted? It's got silver brushed on paint.

I have some other pics but am having trouble transfering them from camera to computer. Not pictured one of the top threaded holes has a broken off bolt in it. And above and around the trailing plug hole the chrome has an almost serrated surface. It's not like scars from foreign object, but more like uneven wear or manufacturing defect. Pics of those things will have to wait till tomorrow at the earliest.

The housing is scrap. If it was next to free, you could practice porting on it. Otherwise get your money back.

Working on getting a refund. He's willing to refund me, but the hangup is going to be who is paying shipping. If I pay shipping I am out that money because he lied about the condition of the housing. Whether his intention was to mislead or not the end result is the same.

My fear is about his defenses of that housing... that it is within spec for flaking according to Mazdatrix. Those are his words in his replies to me. My fear is that this thing will go back up for sale again. He has used all kinds of suspicious language about that housing. He's claiming he paid $300 for it, before purchase he claimed it was less than 1 in of flaking. I asked about the spark plug holes and he said they are fine...what he DID NOT tell me was that the chrome all around the spark plug holes was serrated. My fear is that someone else will end up stuck in the position I am in.

Going back to the shipping thing. My feeling is that if that housing was worth $300 to him then he would also be willing to pay shipping to get that housing back to him.

I suspect that the seller knows he sold you junk. My bet is that nobody at Mazda Tix or any reputible dealer would do anything with this housing but drop it into the scrap aluminum box. Get back all you can, and if you get burned for the shipping, make it a lesson learned. See if it will fit in one of those post office boxes and compare that to UPS.
