Just ordered some new Apex Seals from Mazda and what I got back was 2 piece Seals with the little triangle piece all glued on and everything.

Had some discussion with Mazda about what seals they were using now but the guys at the parts center didn't really know when or why they changed. There has also been a question if these seals are as good or better than the older 3 piece seals. Does anybody have experience with these new 2 peice seals? Are they better than the 3 piece ones??

Mazda = good

From what I have heard and read the 2 piece seals are much better than the 3 piece ones. They seal better have less moving parts and are safer at a higher RPM. So I myself would go with the 2 piece if given a choice.

From what I was told, and Dragon and Igy may have more on this, a set was ordered for an FD engine rebuild by one of the guys in Japan, when questioned the new seals were supposedly being released with the new materials being used in the RX-8 Renesis engines, Mazda felt it was a better design and material and has now changed all of their seals to this style. I could be wrong, but that was the rumor we heard in Okinawa.

the 3 piece design seals better at lower rpms, but after many miles it is a common sight to see the corner piece scratch the **** out of the lip of the rotor housing it runs on. i don't know about the materials used,

Camel is right, when the apex seals came in we questioned the shop that ordered them, so he called mazda.

OK well we put the engine together with these seals and it is going in the car tomorrow. I guess I will find out the long way. I have been working closley with a very big name shop in Tokyo on this new buildup and he said the mazda 2 piece were not good. Not sure for what reason he was saying that.......might just be a personal prefrence thing. Gonna be running a Sideport with a TD06H-20g If I get 375hp at the wheels I will be happy https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

Come on Randy, you know why. He just wants you to buy his $800 set of seals so he can make $600 profit. If you get a chance ask why he doesn't like the new mazda 2 piece apex's.

I get to go to the FETC. I'll be there the last half of the first week.

that was pointed at Ranzo and I was just to lazy to PM him.

Ranzo 02-05-2004 06:33 PM

Well as for the Apex Seals he said I really didn't have a choice cuz that is what Mazda is selling now.. Unless I wanted to buy NB apex seals which he said was too much money for most applications.

The FETC huh....... I will come up and see ya one night then. They have me scheduled for the second week https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

I heard that they aren't very good either, but that was also from a shop owner. They are in mine now, so I really don't have a choice. Hopefully the WPC treatment will help if there are weaker.

RETed 02-11-2004 09:42 AM

I'm just confused.

I've got at least 3 customers running them, and we've had zero problems.

They should be stronger, as the tend to fail breaking across the width (not thickness) when the seal starts to wear on a 3-piece.

At least with the 2-piece, you can use this seal a lot longer.

The discussion on the "other" forum seems to think the new 2-piece Mazda seal is a good design.

What is the price of these seals in the states? I see a few places sale them for 59$ each, Mazdatrix and others, are these the same seals?

I paid roughly 30 dollars a peice for them. I thought it was a deal 6 seals for 180bux. I like how easy they are to put in compared to 3 peice seals.

Chuck did you find out what seals were in that Border engine??

BigTurbo74 02-11-2004 11:04 PM

well didn't you say that the corner piece was just glued on? so in reality you have the 3 piece seal becuase after installation the corner section breaks off?

sleeper7 02-11-2004 11:18 PM

ranzo

3 pc. all bearing are no good! no oil...

Bigturbo

The seals ranzo bought where 2pc 2mm. The end pc was glued on.
