Is lapping side housings required every time an engine is getting a rebuild or would it be okay to assemble without this procedure. The engine is in good condition with not much wear but I just want to make sure before I put it together.

By the way Mazdatrix charges $60 per side which would be 60x4= $240

it's not needed in EVERY rebuild, you definately should measure the wear on the sides of the housings before you make your decision. there are tolerance specs in the fsm for reference. some people don't like lapping because it strips the wear surface of it's 'harded/nitrated' layer. mazdatrix laps but they also fire treat the housings to help with the excessive wear problem...maybe that's why they are so expensive? good luck

FSM has the procedure to check it. The engine I just did was within spec so no lapping for me. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif You should check it. If its not within spec either lap it or set it asside for a rainy day. Clearence everything! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif

An engine only makes as much compression as its WORSE sealing surface allows. Think about it.

Very good point. We lap every plate surface on every engine we build. We are trying to find a local company to retreat the surface whether its nitriding process or flame sprayed.

There is a company in alabama that does nitriding.

no problem.

I turned down a job in Anniston, at the Chemical Munitions Disposal plant

Braddcock is about 2 miles from where I work my daily job. Thanks again.

My Uncle works at the Incinerator(sp?). I've considering applying but decided to skip it in favor of the new Honda plant being built. Long term job security much better at Honda than with a government contract that will run out in 7+/- years.
