The cheap impact I've had for years isn't up to rx 7 standards. I think it has a max torque of 350 ft/lbs ( sunex 634c ) . Will 700 ft/lbs be enough for fly wheel nuts and front pully bolt or should I go for 1000 ft/lbs ?

for the fd front pulley bolts get the biggest thing you can find, they dont like to come out easily. my friend has a jig to put the whole engine in a press to loosen those. the flywheel nut isnt nearly as big a deal

for the front pulley bolt, i use a breker bar, pipe wrence, and a propane torch. 100% success rate so far, although it does struggle sometimes. the torch is ubiquitous!

You never know with the flywheel nuts or the front bolt. I've had engines where the impact gun pulled them off like they were finger tight and I've had other engines where they wouldn't come off with a 10 foot breaker bar.

[snapback]745677[/snapback] [/quote] This is my experience as well. I made a 'sst' that consists of a peice of chromemolly that locks onto the flywheel dowles and is about 5 feet long. Then i use a breaker bar on the front with a pipe extension. Get a couple buddies and have at it, Usually the flywheel side will lift up the guy hanging onto the breakerbar (you are twisting in opposite directions) and after you get his (hopefully fat) ass up in the air it always breaks loose. This is of course after heating and cooling the nut several times. I had a reman that would NOT come out. So after several heating and cooling cycles i was trying to impact it off. (alone) I got it SUPER hot and tried. The fucker busted, and liquid hot silicon shot out of the eshaft and crushed myself and my gun. fucker burned the hell out of me! Mabye it was an overdose of locktite, i cant really figure why silicon would be used there... |
well I bought the impact with 1000 ft/lbs of torque. It worked great on the first motor. I'll post again after I pull the next one apart.

I've never had any problems removing the flywheel bolt with my 550lbs impact.
However, it took a 1000lbs impact to remove two front pulley bolts and one was so stubborn that I hauled it to a shop and they used their 3/4in. ~1300lbs impact to get it loose. And it loosened like on the 3rd try! |
I finally broke down and picked up a new impact gun about 2 months ago.
specs: 1" drive, 3000 rpm free speed, 14.5 CFM average (60 CFM continuous duty), 2500 ft-lbs output. Its not the fastest impact gun, but its never hesitated, on anything, ever. If its not coming loose with 2500 ft-lbs... its not coming loose. |
After surprisingly easy success on a flywheel nut with my cheapie 275 lb-ft impact wrench, I proceeded to struggle with the front pulley bolt. Days of squirting PBlaster behind the washer/flange and hitting it for a couple seconds didn't work until this afternoon, when it finally decided to come out, but it was all my little impact could handle.

A good piece of advice is to knock the front bolt loose while the engine is still in the car...
Put a 19mm socket onto a breaker bar, and rest the bar against the D/S chassis, and then crank the starter before you pull the motor. Knocks loose everytime. I find I always have a harder time with the front bolt than the flywheel nut.. One time I had to cut the front boss off with a zipwheel because our 1" drive impact gun at work wouldn't get it off (same specs as scathcarts gun, FYI they are for buttoning up tractor trailer wheels, which are torqued to 450 ft/lbs, which is slightly higher than what the flywheel nut is suppost to be torqued to).. |
