My problem is that I want to have either a stage I or II street port, but there is nothing wrong with my engine now and does not show any signs of problems. So should I get a rebuild done, or should I just get all new gaskets for what ever I take apart? Thanks, any input is valued.

how old is the engine? its not really worth takign appart just to port unless u are looking to buidl teh car up

only advisable imho if youve already exhausted all your mod options..

also pending on how long you percieve the downtime maybe..

and whether or not you can live with that timeframe..

You could buy a similar junk engine from a scrap yard to take apart to learn with,



Or, buy a good core engine from a scrap yard. and port and rebuild that one as



time allows. Then install the fresh ported engine, and have a (known good spare)



to use for a back up.

Depends on how old the motor is.How old is it?If its going be taken apart and ported why not rebuild it unless its just about a new engine.Better safe than sorry.

Its from an 87 N/A, and it has 110,000 miles on it. But the guy who I bought it from was a Mazda tech. rep. and he said that it was just his daily driver and said that he never beat on it. Not that all things that are said are true, but I believed him b/c he had two others in his garage. An R1 FD, and a 89 Turbo II.

Well you really shouldn't trust that guy if you didn't know him.Im not saying he's lieing though he could be telling the truth.Unless seals are going then it doesn't need a rebuild.My friend has 163,000 miles on his N/A motor and it don't need a rebuild.Your good for the time being but if you have the money and will own the car for awhile just rebuild it.I mean is it really worth porting and putting back together a motor that has half of its life left or even less.You'd drop it back in then probly 20,000 to 40,000 miles down the road have to take apart the block and do a rebuild.Make it easy on yourself and get the rebuild done if you have the funds.

it would be silly to pull out a 15 year old motor and not rebuild it. if its never been beat that means the housings should be decent.

I would do the rebuild. If it were me, I would do the rebuild while the engine is out. Just so much easier that way. I have 166352 miles on mine, and she runs GREAT!! That thing will last another 30,000 miles at least. But I will also be doing a port in the near future, and when I do, I will be doing a rebuild. It would just be the smart thing to do.



Think of it this way. If you get some sick ass rims, would you wrap them in the tires you previously had? **** NO. And what are you meaning by a stage 1 and stage 2 port job? How big are the ports on it? Also, look around for the guys that do port jobs, like Judge Ito,and BDC. BDC does some brilliant and beautiful work(bridgeports). I have never personally seen Ito's work. Anyone have any pictures?

My 2c: What is your mod list at the moment?, when you port your engine youre going to want the intake/freer flowing exhaust to be done already so you can match the port, Id mod your existing setup first to the level youll want it to be when you get your rebuild, a full rebuild is definate. If the engine is running fine, it doesnt need internal work yet, although at that amount of miles I would say it will near future.

Or, buy a junkyard engine or jappa with good compression and pull it apart and do the rebuild and work yourself, you could use one of Judges Ito's mana streetport templates- definately a rewarding and great learning experience, then swap it in when complete, keeping your original engine as backup incase of.. um.. unforseen circumstances!
