Need help here
Lets say I buy a RX-8 e shaft according to mazdatrix "These shafts are .6lbs. lighter than the earlier 13B shafts. The main journal diameters are approximately one-half thou smaller, and there is a one-half thou taper in the rear main journal." notes for the RX-8 stationary gears "Does fit all 13B, hardened multi-window bearing, set screw retention. Bearing clearance must be checked/modified if using this with any RX-7 13B shaft" But with the above statement no modification if I use the RX8 E-shaft+staionary gears correct? main bearings use RX8 ones after checking clerance? (if needed or maybe not since there new items?) which rotor bearings to use If I use Turbo II rotors in this Hybrid motor REW plates+Housings RX-8 E-shaft RX-8 stationary's Turbo TII 87-88 Rotors REW flywheel and front counter wieght I do plan to have the rotating assemby balanced any insight will be helpful is it worth it? or should I just stick a TII rotating assembly with REW stationary gears |

I don't think the motor will be balanced if you use
Turbo TII 87-88 Rotors REW flywheel and front counter wieght Rotor bearings you could use REW or Rx8 rotor bearings. You gotta first figure out how much clearance you got or want |
you're right about the motor not being balanced if he bolts it together as is. however, he said he plans to get it balanced. as i understand it with all the crap i went through to get my last engine balanced, the mix-n-match builds will be fine as long as the parts are balanced together.
related question: anyone know (or have a reference for) the differences in rotor bearings between the different 13Bs (Renesis included)? i just don't understand if one replaces the rotor bearings with the race spec bearings and it fits all rotors, why he'd be limited to only the REW or Rx-8 bearings. |
The balancing shop would have to add weight to the counterweights to make it work with S4 TII rotors. Or drastically lighten the rotors themselves.
Stick with TII assy, REW stats. |
I'm building an S5 T2 motor for a customer right now and he wants the RX-8 e-shaft and stat gears. Any problem with running the stock S5 rotor bearings as long as they are clearanced properly?

Joe, I've got a brand new RX-8 e-shaft. I can stop by some time this weekend and you can measure it for bearing clearance yourself if you like.

Seems from what I can tell based on what I've read, the Rx-8 e-shaft is interchangable w/ the older 13B's (if you use the Rx8 stationary gears) and I would guess is preferable over the older stuff simple because the parts are relatively cheap and they're new. Looks like it'd be a good idea to upgrade, but I would also advice using new rotor bearings, even though there's 0.0005" more clearance which I feel is a bit of a non-issue, as well as upgrading the pressure regulator to the FD unit as well as having the entire crank assy balanced (rotors, shaft, and front/rear c/w's).
Due to the cheap prices of the gears (with new bearings already installed) and the crankshaft, I am considering using this hardware on this next built I'm currently in the middle of re-doing. B |
so upgrading seems pretty easy and also cheap. but what are the benefits besides the lightened e-shaft? are the gears harder than the REW's?
and mazdatrix sells three different rotor bearings for the REW. wich one would you use? |
I just recieved the new RX-8 e-shaft and stat gears, I'll be assembling the motor with S5 T2 rotors this week.
The motor is going in an 87 T2, so we'll see how it works! |
