How often do you wind up having to replace certain parts when rebuilding a high mileage but still running rotary?



As in how often do the side housings really wear out beyond use? Anyone have some milage figures? Replacing all the seals and what not I'd figure is a given but what about the rest of the more expensive stuff?

the answer; it depends. if you take it apart and all the housings are cherry they will run a long time, it kind of like rebuilding a piston engine without honing the cylinder walls. sometimes its good enough to work for a long time, sometimes not. then you have to balance that with how long you want the motor to run. same for the side seals, and the rotor oil seals they have wear limits and you can exceed them but it will bite you later

Figured, was just hoping there were some guidelines. IE at 180k you're going to wind up honing the cylinders on a ford V6 unless it's a miacle.

yeah rotaries are kinda the same and it also depends on how cheap you are.



rotor housings: on a na will usually go about 120-150k before they start to get really tired, although i have a set of cherry ones that have 212k on em. fd rotor housings last about 60-80k before they are too ugly to reuse, imo



side housings: on an na they will go a long time 200k+, fd they last about 100-120k



rotors: last as long as the seal grooves stay in spec, na=forever, fd 50-100k miles



e shaft: til you run it without oil



rotor oil seals: they give you a spec in the book, the more you are over that the more oil its gonna use



side seals: they get shorter over time, and the more clearance between it and the corner seal the less compression you have.



corner seals: they wear where the side seal hits it, usually can be reused without drama



apex seals: um bad to reuse these, as its hard to tell a good one from one thats about to break



seal springs: its usually cheaper to buy new than taking the time to clean em

My 160,000 km (100,000 mile) motor needed:



Apex seals

Springs (all of them)

Oil control rings.

Oil injection pipes (discoloured and brittle from ridiculous underbonnet temps that we see in Western Oz!)

One housing (end piece scoring and flaking. Only a little bit but not perfect)

Iron housings all very good.



That was it apart from the obvious rubber seals etc.
