i just got done reading the shop manuel on the internet for the 1001 time for rebuild a 13t. How nessesary is it to check all clearences? It seems that it could get quite exspensive to buy all the tools to do so, on top of paying for a rebiuld kit. If you dont check everything what all do you check? I wont be doing a full rebiuld, just a refreshment type(new seals)

Will all the measuring be nessesary? The more I read, the more i get confussed. And no I havent purchased a video yet .

I checked everything except the corner seals in their bores. They moved freely and that's all I cared about. I did, however, buy a 0-4" micrometer off Ebay, along with a telescoping gage set, so I could measure the stationary gear to side seal clearance and eshaft journal to main and rotor bearing clearances. If you don't really care too much, you could just reassemble it with new seals, but it wouldn't be an actual overhaul, just a seal change. A rebuild, by the way, is bringing all clearances back to factory new specs, not within limits. I think most people use the term "rebuild" to mean seal change, internal repairs of busted rotors / housings, and looking it all over (no measuring), which sounds like what you are thinking of doing.

Checked everything, twice. Its all the little things that make a difference on an engine that will last 50,000 miles or 100,000.

Exactly...if you want it to last for a while check all clearances. Buying cheap tools off ebay is better then not checking them at all

If I'm going to go through the trouble of taken a motor out, disconneting everything to do so, then take the whole thing apart to rebuild it. You better believe I'm going to check my clearences before I put it back together. Checking the clearences is like give yourself a fighting chance of building a good reliable motor. Things can still go wrong, but the chances are greatly reduced.

I clearance the side seals, corner seals, new apexes, measure rotor housing widths, but don't bother with side plate or E shaft unless they look like they might need it.
