I have two 13b engine cores and I need to know what they are so I know if I can use any of the parts. I dont know how to tell the diff between an '88 & '89 , or NA & turbo. I attached a couple pics of each...

s4 turbo.

the turbo motors are 4-port instead of 6.

omp area--only 2 bolts, instead of 3, like on the s5's.

rotor housings-- s5's have a hole for the knock sensor above the trailing plugs.

those are the easiest ways to tell.

wow, thanks for the quick response https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png what do you know about interhange-ability between 13b's, or do you know of a website that lists, in detail , the differences like oil passages, plug spacing, bolt patterns & whatnot.

guitarjunkie28 06-07-2006 11:33 PM

plug spacing is different from the s4's to s5's, but they're compatible. it'd just be a good idea to use either-or, instead of one of each.

irons are all interchangable.

rotor housings we just covered

rotors and all other internal parts are, except a few things to note:

if you use the s4 rotors, you MUST use the s4 front counterweight. also, rear counterweight/or flywheel to preserve the balance of the engine.

s5 stationaries are harder and more durable

s5 irons are a tad strnger in some areas

s5 front iron uses a washer and o-ring, instead of just the o-ring to seal the oil passage to the front cover...this is VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!! if you screw up on that part, you won't have much oil pressure and you'll roast your bearings with haste.

the s5 omp is different than the s4. use the front cover from whatever year your computer and harness came from.

use the turbo drain line from that year, as well. s4 and s5 drain lines are different.

BTW. This the flare union you were asking about in the other post.

I noticed the flare unioin as well when I dragged these engines out from under the bench. Thanks again for the reply https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif The reason I was wondering is because I have to email Jeff Bruce back to order the "kit" and before I did that I just wanted to know about what works with what, and if I have any parts here that will work. As far as the porting goes it really dosent matter since they wont be used anyways.

If you want to use the S4/5 rotor housings with your S6 you'll need to do something with the coolant passage to intake manifold. I'd have to look at an S6 lower but you could most likely just use an o-ring between the manifold and the rotor housing to seal them just like the S4/5.

Both appear to be series 4 turbo blocks.
