Hello all,

I have a 91 N/A Coupe that lost lost an apex seal a few weeks back. I presently don't have the time. skill, or place to rebuild it myself so I am having one of the shops in Atlanta rebuild it. Since it's going to need to be rebuilt I figured this is a good time to do some upgrades to increase the power of it. Here's what I am wanting:

1. Keep it streetable

2. Have it pass emissions

3. keep it N/A

I am looking at going with a street port. If I go with a mild street port would I see more power out of said port if I upgrade to a standalone engine managment system and larger injectors? Would the port and possibly the new ECU and injectors take the powerband past the factory 8K RPM redline. I am cool with that idea if this is the case. From what I can tell I would need to use hardened gears and possbily different apex seals than the factory 3 peice 2mm seals, like say the Atkins or the Rotory Aviation seals would work if I understand things correctly. My present clutch is about dead so we will be replacing that during the rebuild I am looking for something a bit more durable and would be able to handle the increased power. Would I also need a diffrent flywheel as well? Am I on the right track here, off my rocker or what? I would be greatful for any feedback you guys may be able to offer.

Thanks in advance

not to be a dick or anything, but if your paying someone else to rebuild and port a N/A car you may want to think about selling it as is, or putting in a good used S5 motor, then getting yourself a FD or a TII, or using the money instead to fund a TII swap.

Rebuild, standalone, flywheel, clutch, and tuning your talking over $5000 easy and you would be lucky to have 200hp in the end, not too mention if it would still pass emissions or not, technically anytime you remove emissions you fail emissions.

For a nice daily driver type of NA, keep it simple and as close to stock as possible. If you want more power go turbo.

High powered NA's cost $$$$$

so you are saying it would be cheaper to build it up as a turbo engine than a higher powered N/A?

No, keep the NA, NA. Enjoy the car as it is and what it is: A nice handling DEPENDABLE FUN car. Do a good solid rebuild on it and learn the ins and outs of a rotary.

Then if you want more power, buy a Turbo model and mod the hell out of it. You will have more fun.

First thing first:

Establish a goal for the car: Be realistic

Establish a budget:

Establish a timeline budget

Evaluate your skills and equipment

Well with bigger ports you will need bigger injectors and Apexi s-afc so you looking around $250 for that + rebuild + headers($150 ish) with that set up 190-210hp is a fair number..... anything else power wise n/a will cost you almost three times that much in the engine rebuild alone.

turbo is an option

sell off your core s5 $250

buying a t2 long block -$1300-1700

rear end from junk yard -$150-250

exhast work, other stuff -$200-500

If you want to get off cheap buy an used engine s5 "from some dude" off ebay who claims it has good compression

engine $350-650 + shipping

its up to you
