Hello, About a month ago I blew a coolant seal due to an AST faileing. The motor only has 23,000 miles on it. “Reman” installed my previous owner. The car itself still runs fine. No loss in power no signs of anything wrong accept all the coolant seal problems. So my question. Cost for Cost. "I would like to get a ported motor now". Should I rebuild and port this motor? What would it cost if only a coolant seal was all the parts needed. Or should I buy another reman already ported?. Ok I live in Northern California , so if anyone can let me know of any shops that rebuild them around here it would be very very very helpful. Thanks!!!

I have never rebuilt a 13B befor so Im not sure about doing it myself. I duno...i just need help i think. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png

you need a full seal set. expect $1k-$2k to rebuild the motor correctly

TylerTRD 04-01-2005 11:51 AM

that being befor labor?

vosko 04-02-2005 02:58 PM

labor depends who is doing it and what is being done

labor rate is from $500-$1500

With the miles being that low I wouldn't hesitate to buy a seal kit and do a basic rebuild. I'm finishing up an FD engine right now that had the same AST issue and popped a water seal on the front rotor at about 60k miles. Everything in the engine speced out just fine for wear but the owner decided on new apex seals and springs while it was down. The parts bill was around $1k.

it's not recommended to only replace specific soft or hard seals in an engine if you go through the whole process of taking it out and breaking it down... if you want to port your engine you want to get all the seal at least up to stock specs or better because you will be upping the power from it. mazda only makes reman engine in stock form so a port job from a remake is out of the question. i would suggest to shop around and make sure you have the resources and the time to get the job done right. you will be dodging a ton of headaches and be happy it was done right the first time.

the only problem with a "REMAN" is you dont know how good everything was when it went together 23k ago.

take it apart and see what it needs, if everythings nice you shouldnt have to replace much, except the coolant seal

rebuild you current motor...

rotary aviation basic kit is only ~$550someodd. then a few misc items from mazdatrix and you're less than $700 in the hole.

labor with portig (if you have someone do it) varies too much to say for sure, but like vosko said, $5-1500ish is about ballpark...probably on the upper end of that with the porting.
