Carrying on from the other thread, don't want to hijack it anymore.



Are there any problems with doing this? Reason being is a have a 'mint' 84-85 style 13b housing that I'd like to put in my '86 13b rebuild if there aren't any problems associated with filling in the coolant O-rings with say, devcon, or some similar compoud.



The way i figure it is that it will be under constant compression so it wont wiggle 'loose' and then come out, are there any obvious problems im not seeing here?

The water passages are effectivly the same, although visibly different, I doubt it _that_ will cause any problems.





Anyone? I'd like to get my rebuild underway and if I can use this housing that'd be awesome.

thought i havent tried doing what ua re talkign about here, have u tried selling the housings u have and just gettign the 86 ones?

Yeah thought about it, but no one in the town i live in would want to buy this housing (or any housing) and postage would probably just get crazy because I live about 4,000kms from anyone that'd wanna buy it.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png





BUT, if there is a problem with doing this, then I will buy a new 'proper' housing, but if there is no good reason not to do this I may aswell give it a try.

Oh and I forgot to say in my last post this 84-85 housing will be next to useless to anyone as it has a bit of corosion from the combustion side o-ring passage into the main coolant passage... Something that would be rectified if i did this filling in of all the o-ring passage...

Would devcon last long? seems it would. its what people use to fill in the intake ports when going to a P-Port, so it should last AGES in the compressed confines of the coolant passage... ?

I think I'm going to give it a go anyway, I mean its not really any skin off my nose if it leaks water, I can always tear down the engine again and use a proper housing.. I've gone without my car for near on 3months now... whats another month.. (even though my apex seals probably wont be here for another month.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR )



So.. Unless anyone has any critisism(sp?) of this idea I'll get back to ya'll in about a month or so when I bung it all back together...

There are several things that would probably work just fine. A little silicone in each groove to increase pressure on the "O" ring and assist in sealing.



One or the other groove filled with Devcon Plastic steel for the iron sides or Devcon Plastic Aluminum for the housing.



Or, just an "O" ring in each groove with some silicone. (I love silicone). Once the engine is assembled, turn it over a few times to push the silicone swarf out through the exhaust port. Never a problem.



If it does start drinking it's own coolant, don't be ashamed to dump in a can of Barrsleak. The brown rat poop looking stuff. This what Cosworth people use.



Run a 16 pound or higher pressure cap. This often works so well that a teardown can be avoided.



I used to replace the back side of Power Products 6.10 Cubic Inch go kart engines with devcon Plastic Aluminum. Never a problem. It stands up to heat very well.



Wear gloves. It dosn't come off.

So putting silicone that close to the combustion side wont cause any problems?

I originally was thinking about silicone, I think the main good thing about it is that it would deform somewhat under the pressure and form and even better seal than the aluminium putty would...





I mean I'm not really expecting this engine to last 100k.kms... Just so long as it makes reasonable compression and doesn't smoke like a bitch i'll be happy...

i'm also gonna tell you to use the devcon stuff. it works great in the applications that i have used it for.





as for silicone being near a combustion chamber, i have picked red permatex out of exhaust ports in a 20B turbo motor that had AVG 1700 deg F EGT's (after a sloppy manifold install job by somone else)



also, ONLY use red permatex type sealant on stuff that get over 300 deg F, everywhere else (oil pan, water pump ETC.) ...use the black **** from 3M

Well I started doing this today, and I have to say I grossely underestimated how much 'metal' epoxy i'd need..



But other than its going really well and looks like it will work perfectly..

will get some pics of the finished product in a few days for anyone that is interested.
