anyone know the details of the material used for the corner seals?

thanks

I haven’t done any EDS on one but it is a cast iron with fine pearlite grains and what appears to be large ferrite grains with large carbon flakes (which makes them brittle) they are also chromium plated. According to an SAE paper it is a flaky graphite cast iron containing boron and phosphorus with a structure of steadite and carbide dispersed in a pearlite matrix. I’m not sure if this paper refers to the latest seal materials or even S5 engines as the structure does not look like that describe by Mazda. The paper is on the net somewhere Mat-tech86-5-8.pdf and Mat-tech86-1-4.pdf

thanks...i need to do more homework on this.

if i were going to make some, what would i ask for?

unobtanium!

guitarjunkie28 04-19-2005 08:20 AM

but will it hold up to ludicrous speed?

Powdered metal.

Looking at the structures of the seals the side seals are definitely sintered (made from a powder) but the apex and corner seals don’t appear to be. If you are going to make some they need to be chromium plated otherwise they will wear the rotors, the dissimilar material ie chromium and iron will not fret and microweld as badly as iron on iron. Your best bet to find out what the material is would be to look at the microstructure and compare it to those of known materials in text books

Are you trying to make some like the Hurley design

i dont think they have changed the material of the seal, maybe at all? ever?
