Engine rebuild?
Looking at the threads here, this is probably in the wrong place, so please, tell me where to go. Everybody else does.....
I am going to buy an RX-8, probably series 1, possibly series 2, but since I have more time than money I will probably be getting one that is long in the tooth, high mileage, over 75K but still running. Expecting that with a high mileage engine I will soon be rebuilding it; I have over 60 years experience in rebuilding piston engines, my first was a Model A engine at the age of 12. I have rebuilt probably a dozen engines since then. All piston engines. So, the question is, "Is rebuilding a Wankel a home project or will it require special, Wankel oriented, tools that I dont have?" Is my experience on piston engines, and my tool set, generally transferable? |
Re: Engine rebuild?
Hi!
You might find this video useful. It's the first one, in a long series: I am rebuilding my first rotary right now, and so far, it doesn't seem difficult. If you have a good understanding of how the rotary works, I think you should be fine. My motor is an S4 N/A engine. I know there are a lot of changes in the RX-8 engines. But, I think, if you follow a manual, and already have a good mechanical background, you'll be alright. |
