Got a dumb question. Ok, I bought my car with an engine fire but I'm rebuilding it anyways. Nothing fancy, just rebuilding my car to full stock specs. Emissions (acv, air pump, splitter pipe, etc.) all intact.

But I got to register the car and smog it right after. Does a new engine run "dirtier" during its break in process? Am I able to pass smog still?

My friends na fc passed emissions with a rebuilt engine, he didnt break it in, just drove it around for about a week. That was with the old tail pipe test. If you are in CA with the enhanced dyno emissions test, i would seriously break in the engine. You should get a pre test done before you get it tested. Your car can be tagged as a gross polluter if it fails the test by too much.

I'll let ya know on Friday. Mine has about 200 miles on it. Damn emissions.

bump

Thanks for the replies. I'm still hoping there is a way possibly. I really want to build up my engine with Rotary Aviation apex seals but the downside is increased break in period. I was thinking of going Atkins since they break in so much easier with used housings (softer seals.)

I'm almost done with my street ported 89TII engine, i will be using the rotary aviation 2mm seals. I'll be attempting to pass the CA dyno test with my car running on premix, i'm ditching the omp. I'll let you guys know, the engine should be running in about two weeks, still waiting for my rotor bearings.

Yea, btw I have the Rotary Aviation seals in my engine. Bout 200 miles on em as of last night. I have to go get the test by friday, so I will le you know then. But, I know I have bad injectors and I have a brand new Bonez converter that was put on about a week ago. Dunno if thats going to make any difference, we'll just have to see.

By bad injectors I mean they like to leak and if i didnt have a fuel cut switch they would tend to flood the car a lot.

Well I failed. Pretty sure why though, getting HORRIBLE gas mileage outa the engine as of now. I'm gonna take out the injectors and get them cleaned. Hopefully that will do the trick. Don't get your hopes down though, I am more than confident it can be done. By the way, how many miles are going to be on the engine when you take it to get it tested?

Dan H 03-09-2004 04:06 AM

Maybe about 100-200 miles at most... Going to have my injectors cleaned anyways during the rebuild.
