Hi All,
After my current project I am going to build a 13B for a bit of road racing and was wondering what will be the better for modification. From my understanding the 13B cosmo engine and the FD are almost identical apart from the cosmo engine being automatic has the counterweight on the end of the eccentric shaft and the cosmo's inlet manifoild is apparently better. I am planning on converting the engine to a single garrett turbo with a custom made exhaust manifold and using Microtech engine management. I am also looking at water injection systems such as the one available from PINZ in Auckland. From reading the threads in here upgrading the coolant seals to Banzai's ones and possibly using carbon apex seals will increase the longetivity of the engine as well. I am unsure of what porting I will use. Some more research will need to be conducted on my part, but being used for track work it will need to have good midrange torque just to get some decent acceleration out of the corners onto the straights. It will probably be going into a rear engined kit car that is usually fitted with a Subaru EJ20T so if anyone has any suggestions for a good transaxle for competition use that would be good as well. |
The cosmo has larger ports compared the the FD motor stock.

these two threads might be helpful https://www.nopistons.com/forums/ind...howtopic=26278 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/ind...howtopic=14153

inmo there is no need to go for teh cosmo stuff on a turbo car unless you are planning to go over 500hp or so. porting should be chosen with HP goal in mind, so when you figure out how much power u want you can then choose a proper port.

Thanks for the info guys,
I am going to source a Cosmo 13B-RE and rebuild it starting this September. Main reasons being that: 1. It's cheaper than a 13B-REW by NZ $1000 2. It has better high end 3. Can be bolted straight into an FC and FC's are "dime a dozen" in NZ We are looking for around 400 to 450rwhp but I realise that being our first rotary build we most likely will not get anywhere near this. So far on the must buy list are: Atkin's Rotary Rebuild video Tweakit Lightened Flywheel either Garrett GT40 or Blitz 660R Banzai's water seals TurboSmart Wastegate Microtech ECU (Unless anyone has any better reccomendations) |
Could always go with the Haltech https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Cosmo side plates and intake manifold. FD rotor housings. Everything else is up to you.

Is there a difference between Cosmo and FD housings becides the sleeves?

Some might say the FD housings are stonger, but I honestly don't know.
