I have a 1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL, and the problem is for the last two months it has been undrivable. About two months ago the Temperature gauge shot from C to H vary quickly. I have been noticing white smoke out of the exhaust for awhile and then this happens. I have been told to check the water pump, radiator cap, and coolant seals. Well, if it is the seals, where can i order new ones, and where can I find a guide to taking apart and rebuilding the 13B rotary? Please help

Another victim of water seals.

Try www.ILUVMYRX7.COM can download the manual, Atkins seals a movie too.

okay, i was look at the www.iluvmyrx7.com site at the FSM and I couldnt figure out where the water seals are....it seemed kinda close to the water pump..and that would be kind of obvious, am i wrong or just dumb?

Also, if I plan on fixing this when I take apart the motor is it necessary to have a complete rotor kit, even though this has to do with the water seals, not the rotors? The rotor kit is quite expensive for a 17 year old working at Wendys so I'm hoping the answer is no, beacuse i was told two things by two people, one said just order the water seals themselves, and the other said order a gasket set, rotor kit, and front and rear seals. Who should I listen to and why, please i really need some help

Ok, the water seals go between the plate and the rotor housing to keep coolant out of the combustion chamber. Understand? You have to pull the eng and take it apart and replace everything that is wore out.

Does anyone have picture of a water seal and the housing to help explain.

You will not know what you need untill it is tore apart.

The orange ones in the lower left are the inner water seal, the black ones are the outer ones. The black one are wrapped over themselves

Here is a shot of where they go in the engine. A rotor housing would then go on to of this sealing the combustion chamber. The coolant seals are the orange ones.

my bad, jspecracer7 is right typed it in wrong

rx7_re 08-14-2003 05:28 PM

Most likely your also going to need new Irons. Like the one in that picture. Due to the fact that they have been overheated, probably several times, there is a pretty good chance they are shot. When they get really hot, the metal warps, rendering them unuseable. But your'll just have to wait till you get it open to see everything thats wrong.

ARe you taking "everything" apart to get to the water seals (o-rings)? Can you leave the rotors and rotor housings alone?

toddp31 08-14-2003 07:28 PM

NOPE, it all has to come apart!

My orange coolant seals are further out then the black one and you can see it squeezing through the cracks between the housings. I haven't opened up the block but does this mean the housings are warped?

toddp31 08-15-2003 07:35 PM

Use a straight edge and lay it across the housing to check if they are warped. Not sure of the measurement though. Where the seals meet the plate if you can catch it with your figner nail they are bad.

rx7_re 08-15-2003 09:19 PM

You should never be able to see the coolant rings without opening it up. I doubt that is really what your seeing, but if in some wierd case it is, that engine is definately shot.

You're probably just seeing the rtv silicone used with the seals when the motor was put together last...

toddp31 08-16-2003 10:32 PM

i hope andynogo is right, if not start looking for new housings https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png
