I was rebuilding my motor over the weekend, and I noticed a green marking on the innner coolant seals. I looked up in the manual, and it says this marking must be placed around the intake port location. Is this important, or can I leave it?



I allready have the block 99% assembled but havent put the tension bolts in. So if I need to go back and reposition them I need to know ASAP! Thanks!

Mr. Hanover can correct me if I am mistaken, but the Blue paint mark indicates the outside surface of the O-Ring, the Green indiicates the splice location; which is designed to be placed in the theorhetical coolest part of the groove; ie. near the intake port.

well, can I leave it where it is, or do I need to go back and change it? I just put the seals in and didnt realize the mark was there, untill afterword

It's up to you. remember that is the weakest part of the seal and if it's right after the spark plugs it might fail sooner then expected due to the extra heat.

I doubt you're going to get anyone to tell you it's OK don't worry about it. Best bet is to tear it down now while it's out of the car just for the peace of mind. No sense in chancing a big, expensive repair to save yourself an afternoon worth of time.

damn, I tightened the tension bolts yesterday. I want to go back in change it, adrian you make a good point. Can I reposition the seal after the tension bolts have been tightened, or do I need some new coolant seals?

**** I messed it up... so I used vasoline for the motor because I had poblems getting hylomar. Anyway so I pulled it apart to fix the seals, and now the outter o ring wont fit in the groove any more.



I need new o rings... CRAP!

I had the same problem, they will fit if you take your time.

Yep vasoline makes 'em grow. I switched to a small dab of wheel bearing grease. Works fine to hold them in, but I'm not sure how much they grow. I'll check it out the next time the engine is apart.

Ya you didn't **** up you learned thats what makes these engines fun it is allways a learnig task working on them. but the rreal reason why it is so importantto put the orange seals in right is not the heat but the compresion. well the heat to but, think about it this way the green mark is the seem and well if you put it on the intake side there is no pressure on the seem to make it split. the compression of the engine will blow it out and then rebuild time so it should be put in right but the heat is also a prob because same thing the heat will expand the ring at the seem then pop. But look on the bright side you know for next time and you can make then fit unless you tore then and you don't have to use hylomar it just holds the rings there you can buy permatex non hardning gasket material instead thats what i use because hylomar is hard to find. well good luck man. And keep on spinning.
