Since most of us can't afford the fancy ultrasonic cleaning machines, here are some tips: I have a large parts washer that uses an aqueous solvent with a corrosion inhibitor. I let the engine parts soak a bit and then carefully scrub with a soft brush. I have a set of engine cleaning brushes I bought from Jegs that work well for the coolant passages in the housings. For really dirty rotors, Mac carb cleaner works great if you soak them in it overnight. Stubborn carbon on the rotors can also be taken off with an angle grinder with a 3M abrasive impregnated bristle pad. Some people use brake cleaner but the parts washer saves me a fortune in the long run. Be especially careful on the rotor housing insides and iron faces. To remove gaskets such as on the oil pan and front cover I use the angle grinder with a sanding pad.
