Well i know i have brought this up before, but....... i really would like to try and turbo these seals lol, nothing huge only like 8-10 psi max the seals are in excellent condition, and i would love to try this. has anyone ever tried to turbo with carbon apex seals, or is it just know that its a no no. Yes i know they are brittle and don't like detonation, But...... they just look so big and wanting of boost, thanks, mike

6mm carbon seals?

mike_rudy 02-21-2005 10:24 PM

Really old 12a stuff, has dual side seals too

It's been done, with varying success, back "in the day".

Bear in mind that they are still much weaker than the weakest iron seals. Size, in this case, does not matter.

Better off giving them to a collector/restorer who can actually use them.

i was thinking of doing that also, for stock 12a iron seals, what is the smallest size i would be able to get away with running around 8-10 psi, 7.5-8mm?? i am still considering the carbon ones just because i want to use them and there isn't really anyone out there i know of that wants to use them as 6mm apex seals they wanna butcher to fit other things

well the 74+ rotors drop right in, theres no point to the dual side seal stuff, except for curiosity.

i think you'll find the carbon seals "evaporate" with boost.

I am not sure I understand what you mean.

There was only one size of iron 12A seal. 3mm.

All 6mm engines had the carbon-aluminum apex seals, which are a goodly portion of why they were not known for their longevity. There were no 6mm iron seals. Mazda switching to the 3mm (iron) seals went a very long way to erasing that image.

I'm running 6mm carbon's in the motor i've just built. I've been seriously thinking putting a s4 turbo on it and a holley and running it at really low boost levels.

There's a bit of info on ausrotary about twin dizzy turbo's.

i was talking abut the stock 3mm iron seals when i was talking about how tall they should, be, after reading tht post on the aussy forum part i am very very tempter to run the 6 mm apex seals because his lasted so long on more boost
