ok guys Im here in a buddy's garage and we have a few thirg gen - 2ng gen motors torn down , but I cant identify which is which . Is there a link that will teach me how to tell one from the other .I Have plates/ housings / rotors , just about everything in a motor .

Any help would be great

Thanks in advance

afaik the motor mounts are attached to the middleplate in the 2nd gen, and to the rear plate on 3rd gens.

just to get this started

what year motor is the Gen II? if it's an S4, you could weigh all the rotors. the Gen III's should be lighter, no?

isn't there something funky with the front covers as well? one of the bolts near the oil pump on the Gen III is not there - or something to that effect?

that's all i can think of right now ...

FD ports are larger than stock FC's.

Get a endplate w/ a mounting location, match the ports w/ a front plate w/ the same size ports, and an intermediate housing w/ no mounting bolts on the bottom, and you have an FD engineworth of irons. I also think there is another oil-feed location on the FD front housingand the front covers don't have a CAS spot.

i thought the S5 ports were pretty much the same size as the S6 ports, which if his Gen II motor is an S5, would make it hard to tell them apart except for the location of the mounting points. i may stand corrected though ...

Mazdatrix.com should have some pics but you will have to look in several different sections to put it all together. To my knowledge there isn't a site that completely maps it all out.

Also, you could look at generation specific manuals and go about a comparison that way, but it will be just as unorganized, at least for the purpose you're after.
