Daytona, right?

Yes its in Daytona. I live about 7-10 miles from the track awwwwww yeeeah. I've been the last four years and I plan on going every year until the day I die. Highly recommend it to ANY motorsports fan. The international racing scene has such a great feel. Its a huge party in the infeild and some of the most spectacular sports cars in the world going ALLLLL night long. I have yet to be able to stay up all night (usually due to a few too many beers). I want to get the four day superticket which includes pit access and entry into all of the qualifying and testing.

If you don't ever get to go you may be missing one of Americas greatest sporting events. Hell sometimes there are even rx7s in the feild and some prototypes running rotaries.

We are waiting for Energizer Batteries to decide to give us a check for sponsorship. Its been real tough finding funding since 9-11. We might be there with our AGT Camaro if we can swing it. Last year there were quite a few Mazdas but they didnt survive very long. There was a great Miata that Mandeville brought but it failed to qualify. Maybe this year. No Mazdas listed so far other than Jim Downings SR car. Hope to see some of the members there! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I swear this is the greatest time of year for stuff to do racing wise in Florida. The rolex in Feb. The 12 hours of Sebring in mid-March. There is also this really interesting event in Feb. called the $2002 challenge. It started a few years ago as the $1500 challenge and last year was the $2001 challenge. The entrants have a limit of 2002 dollars total budget to build their cars and then race in the quarter mile, autoX, and a concousre event. There are multiple prizes to be won like longest distance travelled, best disaster (engine blowing and the like) No matter what it is super fun. Its put on by a locally produce magazine called Grassroots Motorsports ( a great publication for us down and dirty greasy handed M-f-ers who love to race. Check them out at http://www.grmotorsports.com/

My roomate and I started to put together a Turbo Dodge Daytona that we bought for $200 for the event last year, but after hours and hours of work and a really tight time schedule (We bought the car a month before the race) we could never get the poor thing running. Ha! we junked the car but kept the turboI from it to eventually put into another car. What can I say, we're engine swap junkies!

GRM is a great magazine and the $2002 Challenge gets bigger and better every year. If you go to their website you can get a free copy of the magazine just by asking for it! There are 2 Mazdas at the test days. Downings SRP car which is 8 seconds off the pace and the Goldin Brothers RX7 that will get pounded in GTS by the Porsches and is 20+ seconds off the pace. Hope they can get it together for the race.

That sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Building a car on a budget.
