I have a '93 RX7. Eventually I plan on having no cat on it. (with the propers additional mods to keep it from blowing of course)

Is lead aviation fuel ok for rotary engines? I assume it is but I just want to check.

Yeah, it's ok, but you may mess up non-heated O2 sensors. I told my friend about it, and he uses it alot now. It's pretty cheap too, 100 octane.

Viper1308 01-01-2003 10:54 PM

No long term effects??

jackdhammer 01-08-2003 12:40 AM

How cheap is pretty cheap?

The lead can foul O2 sensors, especially non-heated sensors.

Back in the summer I think it was less than $2/gallon.

Silver Ninety Three 01-08-2003 08:13 AM

Can you just go to an airport and buy this stuff?

I would try a small local airport.

You cannot by federal law pump any leaded fuel into a motor vehicle.

You can only buy it and have them put it into gas cans.

You mayyyyy find a super cool guy who works there who might let it slide, but I doubt he will risk a felony to give you some gas, lol.

CrazyAssRX7 01-08-2003 09:36 PM

is this for 2nd gens also???

Bridgeported 01-10-2003 04:05 PM

Generally the laws state that when you buy airplane fuel you must have it put into a metal container (no your cars fuel tank doesn't count).

Like Rob x-7 said, you might be able to find someone at a smaller/local airport or someone that works late who will let it slide and let you pump it into your tank.

haha i got 2 airports near me, i guess u can call em local, only about 20-30min away. small well thats a whole nother story. heh any chance i can get this stuff from JFK or LaGuardia?

I would say your chances are slim to none buying jet fuel at JFK

or LGA.

MazdaMike 01-23-2003 08:03 PM

hehe so whats a cityslicker (well not really) like me gotta do to get me hands on some rocket fuel?

YEEEE HAAAAWWW

Rob x-7 01-23-2003 08:10 PM

Farmingdale-Republic Airport.

rx7machine 01-23-2003 10:26 PM

Rocket fuel.. :smirk: https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Cheers! 01-26-2003 11:13 AM

just mix toulene to get a higher octane rating

Red12aRx7 02-08-2003 08:27 AM

The local airport around here sells it to us in 5 gallon containers or big drums of it. My brother always went down to buy it when he went to the drags. But he became friends with all the guys down there se they would cut some prices for him. So it is cool to run it in most cars because his was an sr20de with 100 shot of NOS. just needed the extra octane to burn that junk in there.

monstermazda 02-10-2003 02:33 PM

our local drag strip evan sells it in five our ten gallon cans..

monstermazda 02-10-2003 02:33 PM

of couse you have to return the gas cans though..

CrazyAssRX7 02-26-2003 01:14 PM

oo but has anyone done this though????

seen affects

like i heard you can hgain as much as 30 hp off using it

is that true?????

sjs 03-02-2003 11:37 PM

Is there a guide as to how much toulene or even higher octane gas mixed with 93 octane = ? octane?

image4you2see 03-02-2003 11:49 PM

Well if your car is stock alls your really going to do is slow the car down......High octane gas is not needed even on slighty modded cars.....You really need some thing to make more spark to burn that fuel before its worthhaving in there......You need more air also but thats a simple mod.....Dont waste your money is what i say......Hell I have a highly modded gm product that runs low 11sec on the bottle and its a pump gas car........So in my opinion its a waste of money.....

Silver Ninety Three 03-02-2003 11:57 PM

Higher octane gas is harder to burn, so you won't gain hp. You may actually lose hp if your ignition system can't burn it.

lane_change 03-03-2003 12:15 AM

My freind just go to a small local airport and pull in, fill up, and leave. They have a credit card machine there so you just swipe your card and fill her up. These cars are a Single Turbo FD, Single Turbo Supra, and a TT Supra on the bottle. It is $2.30 or something a gallon as of last week. I plan on running race fuel for drag racing and dyno pulls but mostly I will run pump gas in mine. I am in the process of putting my Race ported motor in w/ a T78. I have all the fuel, IC, ECU, Ignition, Exhaust, etc..mods that I need. I have not heard any real downsides to using it on high horsepower applications.

Apex13B 03-04-2003 10:21 PM

just buy VP...

Anybody here take apart a motor with av-gas in it?. It looks like a million mile diesel. Avation fuel is sooty, unpure and complete ****. Just smell it and look at it in a clear glass, it looks like dark tea, if you are required to run on high octane fuel..your not tuning it right. i suggest you buy VP fuel for track days/street showdowns. take it from somebody who is sick and tired of ppl cheaping out and blowing up motors with that crap.

i htought aviation fuel is clear light blue? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.png

Travis R 03-10-2003 12:42 PM

I've said this before, I just don't know if it was on this site. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

All higher octane has is a higher resistance to pre-detonation. If your car isn't tuned to make use of that there is no reason to run it. There are only a few ways to benefit from higher octane: higher compression ratio, more spark advance, more boost, or some combination of the three.

So on my N/A motor where I'm not allowed to change the compression ratio (because of the rules of the class I race in) The only way I'll be able to make more power (through the fuel type) is with a lot of spark advance.

Silver Ninety Three, your statement is exactly correct, higher octane fuel burns more slowly. It's not "harder" to burn.

Apex13B 03-11-2003 11:22 PM

You make total sense travis.....but still AV gas is crap. Black soot everywhere!
