I am embarking on a 5-10 year project. I am a dragbike racer who has always wanted to build a Mazda rotary powered drag bike. The light weight of the engine plus the high horsepower makes it a natural choice. Now my first step in this is deciding what base engine to go after. I need it to be a 2 rotor engine. The engine needs to make, and withstand the abuse of, 500+ horsepower. The engine will be turbocharged with dual mechanical injected throttle bodies. There will be no accessories such as alt, a/c, power steering, etc. A bare bones, stripped down engine. It wont even have a starter (will use a starter cart).
That being said, what engine should I aim to pick up? I have researched the expenses involved in rebuilding a motor so would like to start with a low mileage unit if possible.
Am I best to shoot for an OEM twin turbo 13b? What about the Rx8 13b?
Thanks to all who respond. I am a rotary newb and am waiting for several rotary books to show up but am anxious to gain some knowledge.
