...I know this belongs in the "other cars " section, but more people read here. My friend is claiming he did 160...and i called bs on it

spaceman Spiff 04-21-2004 08:17 PM

im skeptacal that your friend did 160 but i think they could pull it off.

RX7Aggie 04-21-2004 08:18 PM

at max speed, power due to engine = power taken away due to drag

formula:

Drag = 1/2*Cd*p*A*V^2

where Cd = coefficient of drag, p = air density, A = vehicles frontal area, and V=vehicle velocity

Power = Force*Velocity=Drag*Velocity

P(hp) = 1/2*Cd*p*A*V^3

im sure its limitted to 130 or something like every other car in the market today

Dysfnctnl85 04-21-2004 08:31 PM

Hey mine's not limited...https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Midnightdriver 04-21-2004 08:51 PM

the speed tests done on it put it at a little over 150 in stock trim with a few upgrades 160 is possible. I had my turbo 2.5 rs up to 147 with a few hundred rpms left to go.

venomrx7 04-22-2004 07:51 AM

I have a video of a srt-4 neon hittin 160 with nothing but a chip and bov!!

Sti's I would think would be limited with gearing, rather than just drag. Since they are geared rather low....you know...being a rally car and all...

spaceman Spiff 04-22-2004 09:12 AM

they are not so a rally car as they are rally inspired they have a rally inspired susension and such but supposidly the tranny is a 6 speed race inspired tranny which i am guessing they dont mean rally by that since they say rally and race like it means two different thigns? just a guess.

Dave 88 A.E 04-22-2004 11:04 AM

I am pretty sure the tranny is geared low. I have a friend with a STi and he said his first gear is somewhat useless. It revs out way to quick. They may have put higher gearing in it for highway driving though.

A friend of mine said he was in his friends STI (total of 4 adults in the car) and he had it pegged at 160mph. The STI was stock then, and I didn't believe him at the time. I don't think they were actually doing 160 though. I can read 158mph on my 600, but that doesn't mean I'm actually going 158. Speedo error can really throw you off. From my understanding they can reach some pretty high speeds though. They have a theorhetical top speed of 176 with stock sized tires and gearing. That doesn't, however, take into account coefficient of drag, rolling resistance, etc. They are potent cars nonetheless.

Even if the car is "geared low", I guarantee that top gear is a pretty steep overdrive, and fifth is probably an overdrive also. With that kind of power-to-weight, I suspect it could get near 160, assuming it wasn't governed.

Shane.Trammell 11-16-2005 12:12 PM

the real question you need to be asking is where he did this 160. are there any straights around you long enough and clear enough to reach that speed?

1988RedT2 11-16-2005 12:26 PM

BTW, a quick google search reveals reported top speeds from 146 to 156 mph.

I-4 coming back from Orlando to Tampa. The kid is an idiot. He wouldn't think twice about doing something that could have killed all of them. He tried taking a 90degree turn at 80ish and actually downshifted and accelerated in the turn. He ended up spinning out and crossing 6 lanes (7 if you count the turn lane) of traffic on US Hwy 19. He came to rest in the middle of a gas station, and said something like "well I guess we'll have to bust a "U"ie". He ended up rolling it a month later. It's fixed now and his driving hasn't changed.

160mph on the speedo would probably be right around 146 to 156mph depending how far off it is from the factory.

Shane.Trammell 11-17-2005 12:17 PM

talked to a guy with a wrx with a few upgrades today and he said he had his above 140 with more to go. he said hed believe 160 in an sti

sweet7 11-17-2005 01:41 PM

I'd be scared to take a box on wheels to 160mph.

HELL 140 on the interstate in my 95 Eclipse GSX was scary! And that had AWD as well! The STI spoiler surely plants the ass end firmly, but 160mph in any car would leave you with sweaty palms. Let's all agree that it's stupid to go that fast on public roads.

Certainly got my vote.
