i went down to mazda yesterday to look at cars since im having no luck finding an rx-7 (its really pissing me off). I saw the protege 5 sitting there an walked over to take a look and while i was walking over i saw the tiburon and i had too look i got in it and started messing around it looked pretty cool. I would of test drove it but i forgot my damn liscence. What do all of you think about it. The one i was looking at was the gt v6 with the ultra sports package 3 and the4 speed automatic shift-tronic transmission. Should i buy it i really want too! oh i forgot the leather seats and the 380 watt stereo that come standard

Hold out for a 7. My sister has a tiburon fx and I can't stand driving it, FWD junk, whenever I get on it nothing but wheel spin and I don't go anywhere. She's also had a bunch of problems with it (perhaps it's a lemon, unsure, our other hyundai (sonata) had some problems too though). I guess it depends on the price, but regardless... It's just not worth it. You can generally find a 7 for less money, and it's a true sports car, RWD, limited slip, rotary, 50/50 weight distribution... and it's just far more attractive.

And if you want to go fast, you can make the rx7 very fast for alot cheaper than it would cost to make the tiburon go fast and handle. Have you tried cars.com and autotrader.com? where are you located?

my $.02

Isnt the top of the line tiburon $21,000? **** me if I would spend that on one of those, the re-sale on it will kill you. Hold out for a 7, or the new Mazda 6.

RotaryBoy88 04-21-2002 07:25 PM

I read in my brothers car and driver, that the new Tiburon isn't that great (to some it up). Plus they said when you shut the door it sounds like it's goin to fall apart........ jus my .02cents

Seppuku 04-21-2002 07:40 PM

ahhh! you guys are probably right but the car looks cool! what about the protege 5? is it any good? i gues the only way to find out about these cars is to drive them myself huh

and when i closed the door it didnt sound like it was gonna fall apart maybe they slammed it too hard

The Tib is a great car. Don't compare the Hyundai of yesterday with the Hyundai of today. The motors are designed in a joint venture with Mitsubishi. Not only are they willing to prove they will back it with the best warranty hands down (10 years 100,000 miles). The Tib is awesome and looks like it has some Ferrari styling to it.

I drive 60 miles a day and couldn't afford to keep my Honda going, so I bought a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and the first year has been great. 140 HP stock and it was CHEAP. Of course the warranty was the clencher.

Anybody read Sports Compact Car? See the Tiburon from Texas? He put a 2nd engine in the back of the car for a 2 engine AWD. 600+ HP from a single turbo setup. It blew the competetion away in the performance quest for the Utilimate Sports Car. I mean how many cars do you know that run a 10 second 1/4 mile?

Now before I get pummeled with responces. I in no way think the Hyundai is on par with a RX-7 or just about any other SPORTS CAR. But if you want a sporty ride (Eclispe, Honda, ... etc) with no worries for the next 10 years, The Tiburon is definately an E-TICKET.

Rob x-7 04-22-2002 07:17 AM

You bought the Elantra new? To me the difference is the Elantra is transportation, the Tiburon looks like youre trying, although the new one is definitly a better looking car then last years. If youre going to lease one its one thing, but to own, the car wont be worth anything used.

YucA 04-22-2002 08:32 AM

the new tiburon looks pretty nice, but the older one was butt ass ugly. I dont know too much on the tuburon, but the i like the looks of the mazda 6. it just a sweet lookin car.

i know wut you mean bout finding a used RX-7. lets just say i will be going boinger for a while.

The Protege5 is a pretty nice car. My buddy just got one to replace his ailing Ford Ranger. Its basic transportation, with a lot of sportiness and utility thrown in.

That new Tiburon looks like Hyundai threw a Mustang, a Celica and a TT in a giant car blender and half-baked the results.

For cheap transportation... and a 10 year 100,000 miles of worry free driving why not.

Yes I bought my 2001 Elantra new. $10,700 is what I paid. It has AC, PW, PDR, PM, 5 speed, 140 HP Motor. I added alarm system, MP3 player, tinted windows, wheels and a few extra speakers. :p

speaking of tiburons... just got back from a nice drive from chicago to dekalb and back, while in dekalb encountered a riced newer tiburon, sounded like exhaust not much else... Best part was, the driver was a hot college chick (this was practically right in front of NIU campus on route 38, the main road going through dekalb by the campus). First she tries to cut me off and fails miserably then the next light we magically end up side by side, the rest is history https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png got up to around 110ish, 1st gear pulled hard on her got like 5-6 car lengths then the rest she somewhat kept that distance til i hit 4th whereabouts she shutdown, hit the hazards. I believe we blew a few red lights in the process. The plate read: 'lips 47' or something, i may be off on the numbers.

After hitting the hazards I downshifted and let it come down to around 40ish, she pulls up next to me and gives a thumbs up i return the favor, she smiles and turns at the next intersection :/ shoulda got a number heh. Actually, I think I saw some neon in the interior, **** that.

I read that. That car was pretty cool. I want to order the video of them doing all the tests. Mainly, just to see the burn out the thing does.

The 03 Tib doesn't look that bad. Can't really be compared to a 7 though, they are completly different cars. The Tib has 181 hp (148 rwhp) 177 lb-ft (161 rw lb-ft) and a 1/4 mi. time of about 15.6.

Twin89Stangs 04-23-2002 03:14 PM

If you get a new one make sure to get the Tuscani...

it is a 6 speed 2.7 V6 181 hp and they are decently quick. Plus I usually see them for about 17 to 18 grand 16 if you know how to play the game which is not bad at all. Hyundai has gotten a lot better recently. My g/f's parents have a 99 Sonata V6 and it is a pretty decent car. Other than a mild bushing squeak it has been a reliable car!

phinsup 04-25-2002 11:58 AM

Didn't we pass some sort of rule about anyone you mentions buying a Hyundai has to buy the board beer? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif tiburon

I dated someone who owned one of those fuggers... maybe it wasn't the tiburon, but it was a Hyundai, hunk of crap, no way around it. Tranny went out at 4K miles, car leaked surprisingly enough the day she bought it.

That is my one Hyundai experience.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 04-25-2002 03:33 PM

There are better cars out there for that amount of $. Like the Sentra SE-R spec-V, 175 hp, 180 lb-ft, all for around $17,000. Or, as much as I hate to say it, there is going to be a new turbo neon (while we're talking about buying crappy cars), 205 hp. Not bad for around $19,000 - $20,000.

Rob x-7 04-25-2002 06:36 PM

Its actually refreshing to see how many "exciting" cars are out there for about $20,000 new these days!

I admit the tiburon looks alot better and prolly out performs the older one. About your comment on "how many cars do you know that run a 10 second 1/4 mile" and the set up of it, if you got the $$$$ you can make ANYTHING nuts as hell. :p I've seen the worst cars made into something good. Think of the $$ they put in to that econo sport like thing. Personaly it makes me sick how someone made it fast. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

phinsup 04-26-2002 02:34 PM

True, true, no matter how much cash you dump into or how fast you make it, it will always be a Hyundai!!

isamu 04-26-2002 04:15 PM

They say, you just can't polish a terd. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

I am sure it would be a fine commuter car.
