I don't know if it's the same for every car, but to do it on an RX-7 you just disconnect the battery for a while.

Well on Fords Mercury Lincolns Chevys Pontiacs and most of the late late model cars we use a lil handheld computer a lot like a code scanner to tell the computer all is fine and has been repaired then it will turn it off.....

That or you can do a manual reset on with the cars that have on board diagnostic systems....

Do u think if i disconnect the battery on my 2001 chevy malibu for a while it will work. My check engine light only came on because my wife doesnt know how to put the gas cap back on. And i dont wanna take it to the dealer to have them charge me 30 dollars to turn it off

This is weird, I just had to have my friend re-set the light on my girlfriends galant because the light came on, we read the codes, and its some bullshit, I dont feel like taking the car to the dealer so we just reset it for now. Like Ace said, dis-connect the battery, and it clear them for the time being.

Try the battery thing. The dealer may even charge you the diagnostic labor rate, minimum 1 hour. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/Wow1.gif

hahaha love the gas caps!

I do that to our mechanics when we are slow!

pull a new car off the lot and leave the gas cap off on it and watch them go crazy looking for what the problem is! They never check the gas caps because it is such a stupid thing!

that or i will switch the fuses on them and something on the car will not work (they check to see if they are blown not if they are in the right place!)

:out: :out:

But anyway try the battery bit... beyond that does your car have any kind of information digital read out on it?

Oh by the way we at the dealership have a labor book we go by.... only so much time can be taken to do a certain task!

like 4.2 hours for tierods on a durango...

or 9.5 hours to swap motors... etc...

oh it is like .3 hours for an oil change... the mechanic gets paid by the hours worked on a job they cant go over what the book says unless there is actually more wrong then whatever else is wrong we go back to the book!

Yeah when I worked at the dealership and a car came in and it wasnt warrenty..we would charge the person 1 hr labor...so if the problem that comes up on the obd II scanner is something seriuos and they back down for repairs..we would get just the check out time..I know on some GMs you can diss the battery for some time...And some Crysler/Dodge we used to turn the key in a pattern i think off and on 3 times..then leave it on ..and count the check engine light flashes and then go to a code book ..and see what numbers mean what...like if it flashed a 15 code...engine missfire cylinder 1 ..etc...

Yes and the most problem we had was people leaving the gas cap off or loose..this will set the check engine light off...back before people used to pump gas with the car running..now on these new cars you cant do it ..it will set the check engine light off..cause it has sensors that check leaks in the evap systems..emissions control...

I dont do mechanic work no more.....just for friends and myself...I got tired of being at work 8hrs a day and some day turn 10 hrs in a 6-7 hr day and some days you dont make ****...

Now I use the top of my $2000. tool box to store my new Performance parts for my car...lol.....
