I also had a late 1G DSM before, it was a great car for drag racing. I bought it after my FD, it was because I use to go to a lot of street race, and I always had to play "catch up" with those AWD cars. Sometimes the street is too short, I can't pass them by a lot. I got pissed and went out and bought one also.

I did very little and got very fast in the DSM, it was a great car. It was very cheaply built, just like all the rest of DSMs, but there were a lot of potential in it. I doing consistant 12s without opening the engine, or bolt on any major components. stock turbo, stock engine, stock exhaust (gutted cat) and K&N intake.

However, NOTHING, NOTHING beats my rotary in any kind of enjoyment... except for the A/C in the hot summer.

FD is so well designed, and has so much potential in the engine. It is quite fragile if you don't know what you are doing. Very little mistake is allowed. But if it is done right, the power is so beautiful, so unique.

The road feel on the RX7 is so much more superior then the DSM, handling and cornering ability is unmatchable. I love road racing, feeling the lateral G, the neutral handleing from the FD. The power delivery is so nice, I will always stick with a Rotary.

I've had experience with both, seems like alot of the 1g dsm guys are starting to move up to higher end cars now (2g dsm, rx7, supra, etc). I shared an apartment with a guy that had a 93 talon tsi also, remember that in 93 and rx7 was booked at 40k and probably sold for 30k and a top of the line dsm was about 25k or slightly more. I would suggest that you hold off on the fd unless you have about 4k in the bank, just in case.
