So, the wife's A6 is starting to shake a bit during braking. Warranty expired a while back. Under warranty, the car had the original rotors machined, then replaced, then machined. I found that Autozone lists them for $24. each. This is cheap. Maybe too cheap? Anyone have experience with Autozone Duralast brand rotors?
If I don't go with the Autozone's, what would anyone recommend? And where to buy them? Not looking for anything fancy, just stock brake performance. |
The cheaper the rotors are usually the faster they wear down and/or warp. Haven't used Duralast rotors but have used the Wearever brand at Advanced Auto Parts. Cheap discs but have worked fine for a stock replacement.

yea here's a recommendation, don't buy volkswagon products in the future.

I know it is very much "en vogue" to be a VW basher these days. Nevertheless, the A6 is a very nice ride, and not at all trouble prone to this point. The brake issues were "discovered" by the dealer during oil change visits or state inspections, so it hasn't been the slightest bit inconvenient. The car delivers classy style, twin-turbo power, a beautiful interior, and very nice performance in a daily driver. The new vehicle warranty was all-inclusive for the first 4 years and 50k miles, and that included all maintenance and oil changes. It's still a very tight car with over 60k miles. A friend of mine has a Passat and has also been very satisfied with it. |

Brembo or Zimmerman OE replacement rotors. Axiss ultimate pads. I did look at the Brembo OE rotors. Found them around $120. If I couldn't do a LOT better than that, I'm sure I'll go with the Autozone rotors just to see if they are junk or not. Hell, I could replace them 4 times for the same money as one set of Brembos. Now wouldn't that be fun! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif |
i show OE list @ $70 a rotor....
if you do get the $24 rotors, have em machined, they might not be straight out of the box |

Three brake jobs in 50K miles and you're worried about $24 brake rotors? As long as they're made out of metal they have to be as good as you started with, no?
https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif Maybe you better carry brakes in the trunk just in case. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif |
I find all brake rotors warp eventually. Atleast on the Subarus.
Just get the Duralast. I almost got NAPA white box rotors for 12 USD a peice. Then I thought twice and bought some better ones for 20 a piece. I have tried many pads. EBC, HAwks, Gransports... etc... I find that I always go back to Hawk HPS. |
You should post on the Audi forums. I'm sure there are plenty of threads about this on there.
Some places to look for parts that I like. www.autohausaz.net www.pelicanparts.com www.brakewarehouse.com www.performancepartsstore.com Napa Keep in mind, that is big heavy car and if driven spiritedly will need some good brakes. |
Hit up Sinful, hes been doing some **** research, comparisons, etc on Audis and their breaking, suspension etc.

oe list with worldpac, its usually the same as dealer list. two different kinds too, ate and girling I have found several different sizes (and prices), depending on particulars. Not sure you knew it was a 2001 A6 quattro with the 2.7 twin-turbo engine. |
Aw, poop! Looks like I need a 320x30mm and the Autozone ones are 288mm. I guess I'll go with the Brembo's since Audi wants $149 for theirs, made by Lucas.
|
How are they selling such a wrong size? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Well, there's a couple different sizes depending on quattro or not, 2.8 vs. 2.7T, etc. I'm probably still going to pull one off and measure the damn thing before I buy new ones. |

Brembo or Zimmerman OE replacement rotors. Axiss ultimate pads. Thank you. Your two posts in this thread were very helpful. I'm going with the Zimmermann rotors from Pelican Parts and the PBR Axxis Deluxe Plus organic pads from importrp.com. I may have to alter my thinking regarding you NW folks. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif |
Good choice - I hope you like them. I'm very happy with my set-up even on the track.
|
We put a set of Zimmermans w/ Mintex pads on my buddies 1.8t GTi. Thus far he has been happy w/ them and hasn't had any issues. He's had them for about a year now.
I just had some ATE (atomic ring slots) rotors show up for my 16v GLi. Still trying to decide on pads though. They were a fair bit cheaper than the Zimmermans but still much better quality than you would find from local auto parts stores. Another friend uses the same rotors on his M3 powered E30. Both street and track they have held up well. You can find them at TireRack. |

oe list with worldpac, its usually the same as dealer list. two different kinds too, ate and girling stuff seems to usually be cheaper through IMC, im not at work but i could check on monday. and the list price on worldpac and imc is waaaaayyy off. we only mark up aroud 40-50% and their markup is usually around 100-150% it seems. oh and as for a good place for VAG products http://www.germanautoparts.com/Audi/A6/Brake/72 or call my work www.bahnbrenner.com |
The Zimmerman rotors a really good products.
Is the car manual or 6 speed? Try not to sit with the brakes depressed when stopped at a light or after a hard stop. Remember an A6 is a 4000lb+ car and it really heats up the pads when its stopped. If your standing on the brakes while stopped your cooking the rotors. First rule at track days is to never sit stopped with your foot ont he brake and NEVER set the parking brake, you'll warp your rotors in a heartbeat. I have had a couple of heavier vehicles that warped rotors like this, once I changed my driving style and did not sit on the brakes I never warped a rotor again. Good luck. BTW - Do you have an A6 Quattro 2.7t? If so sweet ass car!! |

It really is a sweet ride. My only complaint would be the soft-ish springs, but it makes a fine daily driver for the wifey. We've had it since new. |
