I've ran into a lot of people (well, not RAN into, but talked online and, well you get it) who absolutely hate American cars. They can't stand them and take every opportunity they can get to bash them into oblivion.

What is this board's feelings on American cars? Mainly American sports cars, Corvette, Viper, Mustang, Camaro, et al. My feeling is I love Corvettes, maybe they're not the most refined thing in the world, but you have to respect them for what they do. Bang for the buck power for the enthusiast who mainly does a lot of racing and can live without some of the refinement other imprts may bring.

If I hear one comment about "If you only care what's fast grow up, refinement is what matters" I will instantly dismiss anything you say. For the most part we are enthusiasts. We should care more about going fast than if the dash is lined in leather or plastic. Yes, it is nice to go fast in style, but in the end, I'd rather get there fast. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a sports car that has all the comforts of a luxury car. However, I'm willing to forgo some comfort for a faster machine.

Opinions?

Thumbs up

Personaly, I like american Sports Cars. Sure some may argue about performace in a stright line, and too heavy for corners. But the feeling of them is great. Also, for dailing driving it, corners should be out of the question unless you attend track events (Organized), and that goes for all cars. You never know who may be coming from the other end of a corner/curve.

There is only one thing I dont like about them though. Due to their Big engines, the hoods (Mustangs), and Dashs (Camaro/Firebird) are hard to see over, giving it an entirely different feeling.

Never riden in a Vette, so I wouldnt know what to say about them.

I have always thought that it was interesting that people "hate" other types of cars. To me it's all about the cars, all types. I think the funniest ones are the V8 Muscle heads who say "There ain't no way that little import will outrun me" The biggest thing I don't like about most of the American sports cars is that they are oversized, some are underpowered(V6 Mustangs-Camaros) and in some ways, are cheaply built. The interiors just look cheap and I've ridden in a few that when you are going down the road at a pretty fast clip, they rattle like they are going to fall apart. Not all of them. I do give credit where it is due. I have seen/rode in some very nice ones as well. Just my .02 cents.

I don't care for camaros and mustangs. Camaros just feel too big and sloppy for me and mustangs are over produced and over rated. I do like the saleen mustangs and I have ridden in a very nice cobra, but still don't care for the look. I do like the z06, a friend of mine has one and it hauls ***. Handles good and looks good too. My all time favorite American car is the viper. It may be a little big, but an awsome car. I don't really like the new body style as much as the orignal. I like any car that performs good and looks good, obviously performance is more important than looks. To me the rx7 when fully modded is the best ride you could ever have.

America has produced very few of what the rest of the world would consider "sports cars". Corvette, Fierro, and Pantera are the only ones that spring to mind.

There are "sports car-like" American cars, like the series of GM cars that were also (along with the Corvette) supposed to get the rotary engine. Cars like the Chevy Monza, and it's GM sister cars built on the same platform (I can't remember thair names at the moment).

Cars like Mustangs, Camaros (and it's GM sister the Firebird), Probes, etc. are not sportscars. Some are muscle cars with a sporty shape, and some are pretenders. None are sportscars.

Americans build muscle instead of sports. Even the mighty Viper is more muscle than sports. It's kind of a borderline tossup on that one IMO.

Things go around and U.S. car makers are due. I suspect in the near future they will produce some dominating and refined cars.

Take it you guys have never seen an SVO mustang???

Those things will out corner the last 87 RX7 I drove!!!

they are piston powered yes...

But not V8!

Oh and the hoods are not that hard to see over... I own 2 1989 Mustangs... neither car has ever let me down!

And I have raced a lot imports... some have given me a good run... some have made me laugh....

I ran into a good race with a 235hp Acura legend... the guy had an exhaust intake and headers on it and he ran me all the way to 115mph where I slowly pulled on him.... there are a lot of fast ricers. And I personally like RX7's and even want a 93-up turbo. But I still got to have a V8 for the sound and low end grunt!
