OK so i talked to an engine rebuilder today.. for at least 10 minutes. sounds like a great guy. But he says that to rebuild your engine with used housings makes apex seals not seat correctly, and apex seals wear alot faster, and basicly he said you are on borrowed time with used housings, Is this true? Sorta makes sense that apex seals might not seat the same, But when you cant afford 1,040 bucks for new housings what do you do? the guy said if you have used housings with 60-80k on them you can bet it wont last to long? But i dont know what to beleive. I cant afford new housings and even to find GOod used ones is a Joke.. Im still looking BTW!!!

I am losing my Mind basicly and if i cant get my car running im going to move on to a truck or somthing, getting parts is a pain in the ass and no one seems to have housings...OR if they Do they dont want to sell them...I ask anyone Please If you know anyone with housings let me know..OR anyone that can resurface housings for a good Price. Like honing a piston engine only cost me like 30 bucks. I cant see why it would cost alot to get a housings Honed/ surfaced... thanks

Technically your engine will only last as long as your most used part. Reusing anything will shorten the lifespan of an engine versus using brand new parts. That doesn't mean it's going to explode in 5 seconds or anything. Look at Kevin Landers over at Rotary Resurrection, he uses used housings all the time and has great success.

well housings seem to typically wear out after 150-200K so if you use ones with 80K u can probably expect to run them another 100K with out problem.

Rotor housings from 84 onwards should have a service life of around 330 000 ks . If there are no groves peeling of chrome , chatter marks or excessive wear of chrome and they measure up as workshop manual specifies they are safe to use and you can expect apex seals to bed in perfectly with a leak down of at least 96% .

I am a firm believer in using new housings on a better than bare bones budget rebuild for every motor. Rotor housing are a wearing item, but you really are only on borrowed time with them before they go out of spec. (chrome flake)

There is some truth that the apex seals wear into the housings and visa versa. This occours on engine break in. It takes new apex seals longer to set into used housings, which is why a break in much more important on a motor with used housings.

Its not that the parts are good when you install them in the motor, but how much longer untill they go bad. It is my personal opinion that for a quality rebuild, new apex seals, and new rotor housings should be used every time. PERIOD
