background info:

so i bought my current rx-7 about 5 years ago from an older guy in the seattle metro area. when i bought it he had a reciept for a shop putting a new clutch LSD in the rear-end (shoulda kept the damn reciept in hindsight). this guys son had been driving the car for a few months before i bought it, and when i finally got arouond to jacking it up it acted like an open diff. i just figured the clutches in the LSD were shot.

as of today lol:

i was pulling the rear axles in antipation of putting in new bearings adn figured i would pull the LSD to finally check the clutches. once i get it out i go "wow, this feels lighter than i remember LSDs being" , i look inside , and low and behold its an open diff. so i asked the P.O. who put the LSD in and he said " i dont remember, mazdas and something" LMFAO

Any sign of welds on the spiders? if so, that would explain it allegedly being an lsd, and also would explain the failure. I know codeblue has a couple complete lsd diffs.

the secondary spiders are chipped/trashed all the way around, not a good tooth on them, so maybe it was welded, i never thought of that. the primary axle spiders dont look too bad, they only have a few trashed teeth on each gear.

I have a few rear ends that you can come and look at. not sure if they are LSD though, I think they are

That would be part and parcel for that place in the old days.

The stories I always heard were them recommending uneccessary rebuilds.

I don't care who's running it now, I'd avoid that place like the plague.

I have heard that the 1s't gen LSD units made noise for some un known reason (stupid mecanic's). The dealer's easey fix was to install an open diff unit with out telling the owner.

Since your gears are wasted i bet they welded the diff gears to hide the truth from someone who could tell the difrence between an open diff and a LSD.

Here's my currently unfolding Mazdas and More horror story:

I took my '83 there for some emissions work, since it was close, they are certified, and I'd gotten some parts from them before. Since the engine and car do not match each other (it's an '84-'85 style), I did not have the rats' nest installed. Also, the original cat was destroyed, so I had a replacement pipe in its place. Well, they said they would put on a new cat and try to get the rats' nest hooked up. Fair enough.

Well, a week later, after the cat arrived (late) and was installed, they called and said they would need the stock carb to proceed with the rats' nest (the one on the car was rejetted, mechanical secondaries, no emissions stuff). I should have expected that. But the thing is that they said the car would be done two days before. Didn't they do a quick inspection to see what was needed before they quoted me a timeframe? But ok, fine. I decided to pick the car up, reinstall the old carb, and take it back to save on some labor costs.

When I got to the shop, there was oil splattered all over the hood of my car, which I was none too pleased about. Turned out the car had been parked UNDERNEATH a car being worked on on a lift. Aarrgg. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif Oh well, it needed to be washed anyway.

I get the car back and I realize that not only did they seemingly do absolutely nothing with the other emissions equipment while they waited for the new cat to arrive, but they also didn't hook up the air pump, so that new cat was just getting destroyed by raw rotary exhaust fumes. Plus, it seems there are now some major exhaust leaks. And it looks like they may have lost the cat replacement pipe, which I had asked them to keep (so I could save the new cat for when I have to do this again next year). https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

Jeff20B graciously agreed to help me get the old carb and air pump reinstalled, and the next day (today), we took the car back to Mazdas and More to have the carb tuned and the rats' nest reinstallation finished. Hopefully they won't abuse it too badly.

Long story short, I don't think I'll be going back there.
