Ok, had a great day of racing on Sunday. On the way home, just as I think to myself "my car worked flawlessly," then it died. If I let it sit for a minute or two it will run for about 15 minutes, then it dies again...damn.

I think it my be the coil. I have just gone with a direct fire system with an MSD powering a stock 2nd gen coil. The coil has been taken off the alum mount (and stripped of the igniter) and mounted on the inner fender well. Looks very clean, but I am thinking that it just does not have enough of a heat sink with all the power from the MSD.

So, what do you think?

Sounds like a fuel issue, dirty filter, dirty pickup, as you drive along the crap is making its way to the filter, plugs the filter. Car dies, fuel pressure goes down crap returns to the bottom. Then is sucked back up to the filter. Dont laugh, I have had this happen on my 1973 VW fastback with a 32/36 weber carb. the tiny little screen on the carb inlet was a sand trap. I have a few extra leading coils with the ignitor still attached if you want to swap them around.

Seriously dont think its the coils JEB. I have been running that setup for two years exactly. Except I just switched it back over to two blaster coils instead of the FC leading coil pack. I think the heat sinks are really just for the ignitors, which you dont have any more. FD coils dont have heat sinks, because the ignitor is a seperate item. Hope that helps.

Have you cranked the motor with a timing light connected to the coil wires? It wont show any spark if the coils are open. Is it all 2nd gen direct fire, or just the leading? Possibly the trailing ignitor?

I would tend to agree with Chris on the fuel issue. Change the filter, check for flow at the carb, yadda yadda yadda, you know the routine.

Good luck

JEB is not running any trailing ignition on this motor. Just leading through the MSD "finally" to a FC leading coil pack. Correct me if I am wrong JEB. but I believe that is his setup.

Yup, that is the setup...

Ok, a couple times when I got in the car I thought that the fuel pump was sounding differntly. Then said it just must be that I have not driven since last summer and it sounds louder.

I will look at the fuel first?

I had thought of putting a timing light on to see if I was getting spark but the problem comes and goes so quickly.

if it's your fuel pump you'll notice that it's spinning faster, not louder. Get rid of the 2nd gen coil and get a MSD DIS coil they're only $40. Jeff noticed the FC coils were getting really hot just bench testing them with the MSD.

FC coils do get hot. I remember that from when I ran direct fire on my first gen. The heat sinks are mainly for the igniter but they help the coil a little bit also.

Not sure

I will swap out the fuel filter and run the car. If it dies again I will check the coil.

Does the carb inlet have a screen behind the banjo bolt, be sure to check that as well.

Will do, thanks!
