I'm sittin' watching "Dazed and Confused" on Comedy Central and they're showing some kids cruising around (this was set in the '70s) in their rides on a Friday night. I remember stories my dad and uncle would tell me about hanging out on Friday and Saturday nights and watching stoplight-to-stoplight drag racing. Listening to these stories, I wonder why the "scene" of "street racing" has changed so drastically over the years. Back in those days, there wasn't the intense violence, there wasn't gambling (maybe some), there weren't insane numbers of fatalities (that I know of). I suppose our grandparents didn't look too kindly on these activities, but I have a feeling they were just like "Well, kids will be kids." But it's not that way anymore, the "scene" is much more dangerous and outlawed. Note, i'm not condoning street racing, i'm simply pointing out my observations and inquiring what you all feel about this.

FC3SJunkie 03-28-2004 09:59 PM

My bad...didn't realize I posted this in the newbie forums. If the mods could please move this to the appropriate forum? (whereever that might be)

This can be put in Gen D. Don't forget that these day's cars are alot more modified than then and the average car had 200HP and went 100mph, Look at what they do know.

Sinful7 03-29-2004 11:57 AM

it's fine here unless it wants to be moved!

What are you kidding me?

Factory cars had over 300 hp V8s with 4 speeds and **** back in the day. Cars used to be FAST when you bought them, now you have to make them fast.

Sure theres well over 300 hp cars out there that are streetable, but who is racing them on the road other than a select few? The whole scene now is kids in hondas with 110 hp driving like morons, cause they're too slow for light to light..

No. Here they had 300hp but they weight heaps which made them slow. They might of had the HP but still.

i.didnt.do.it 03-29-2004 12:13 PM

Cops is what happened...to many of them nowadaze...plus FATF made it(the law) worse by promoting street racing.

mazdadrifter 03-29-2004 12:25 PM

Brings to mind a picture my dad had on his wall of him in a 34' ford coupe. With the front tires about 1 1/2 feet off the ground.

Since cars were mass produced people were always wanting more motor less car. That part hasn't changed. The only thing we have differnet is turbo's (thank god) and fuel injection.

I really don't think it has that much to do with cars in general, just the fact that with every year the US turns more from the land of the free into a police state. And the "lefty's" that try protect everyone from themselves don't help either.

We are becoming so civilized it's boring.

Don't forget electronic ignition too. No more point and rotor buttons anymore, well not for the new cars.

right......howd you get those numbers? im not following you here.. i can think of several cars what made over 300hp and equal or more tq ( which is really what matters on stoplight to stoplight stuff) and weighed in at about 3000lbs +/- a few...... now look at todays "fast" cars.......a honda that makes 160hp ( lets be generous...say its a 99si.. the faster honda(not acura) produced in the states).. that same car weighs in at about 2700lbs..... teh power/weight in the older cars is far superior.. not to mention the GOBS more tq they make/made... which is what really matters

and as far as only running a 100mph.... doubtful...

TyresmokinRx7 03-29-2004 01:15 PM

Ok. I was talking about moded cars. Back then they run stock cars with minor work and now look at what we have. I'm talking about cars that make 400+ HP now, that's what I call a moded car not a riced up honda with a filter and a coke can for a exhaust with 160 HP that rice boy material.

Get a 400 HP car from back then and a 400 HP car now and tell me which one will go quicker (Time).

Does that stand for All Peices of Crap (APC).

Jims5543 03-29-2004 02:57 PM

My dad held a local drag strip record in his 1967 Mustang in the K stock class. It had a 289 with 225HP and ran a record holding 14.62.

2002 Mustang GT's run in the high 13's stock.

We do a few mods to our cars and we are playing in the 12's and 11's.

Things have changed a lot. Plus those cars back then were tanks not like todays cars.

Fast and Furious ruined street racing that simple. I saw a transformation in the police force after the first movie.

You used to be able to pick a good race at a red light with out a problem late at night. Now the cops are hiding everywhere waiting for you to do something.

I actually find it better to race in the 5-7 PM range when there seems to be no police presense at all. Unfortunatly there is also a lot more traffic.

As far as "illegals" go they still race them in this town way outside of town on the roads that lead to the farms. No houses for miles no reason for police to be there. Until they decide to do a suprise sweep and protect the general public from the road racing menece that is 30 miles from town.

defprun 03-29-2004 06:18 PM

You could buy hemi powered dodges from the factory with fiberglass fenders and almost 500hp engines. 500hp makes a 4000+lb heap GO fast.

1gendreemer 03-29-2004 06:31 PM

I guarantee that "back then" there was gambling and intense violence just like today. The difference is that people weren't pussies then. If you got your ass kicked, you didn't go home and get a gun and blast the guy who did it....you came back next week and fought him again (with fists) until some type of resolution was reached. Also, there was a lot less police focus on traffic violations...but moreso on real "somebody got victimized" crime. Legislation brought on by those retarded "lefties" hadn't turned sneezing into a felony offense yet either, so you could do **** and get away with it because it wasn't illegal (read, if you were doing something stupid it was assumed that your parents would do the disciplining). The world is ridiculous anymore.... I fear for my kid and the place she has to live in...

defprun 03-29-2004 07:35 PM

I saw the "Downfall" of street racing come with the movie fast and furious. It showed street racing as an illegal act, and kids doing it because theres money in it, purely criminal instead of a enthusiasts passtime. The day it came out someone totalled their lambourghini diablo racing a corvette. And the first thing that came to my mind was "****, hollywood really just had to ruin this for everyone?" Now im getting tickets for loud exhaust, ect, ect.

I have been in one "real" street race. It was VERY "fast and furious" as in, everyone was a ******* tard and not in it for fun. What they wanted to do is prove something. Something that they didnt have in their pants I guess. I raced, I lost, I got mocked cause i said "nice race" or "that was fun"

So I'm not racing anymore, unless it's at the track against someone i know is going to see the fun in it.

If I would have won, and its not like I would have gloated or anything...its for fun! Guaranteed if i would have took them on on the highway or in the twisties I would have raped them. I would have just gave them a nod and took off. No need for a OMG I LIVE MY LIFE A 1/4 MILE AT A TIME

not impressed.

Midnightdriver 03-31-2004 06:03 PM

I agree you could see a sharp turn in the attitude by the cops that would break you up before and after the movie. Here before the movie the one or 2 cop cars would drive through turn on the lights and make sure everyone cleared out..they would ticket if you didn't move out fast enough or caught you outright racing or getting ready to. Then a group of mexicans started causing trouble..the shot at the crowd because they got there asses whooped in the parking lot...then the next week another one of them lost a race and his buddy started shooting at one of the spots..both got the cops real pissed. they were hot on us for about a month then cooled down to how it was before that group of mexicans started showing up and causing problems..then the movie came out...well for like a year they were pretty heavy. then they calmed down a tiny bit..but now they have some heavier laws...huge fines and can tow your car...In the last few weeks the have had a few news stories about street racing and how the cops are cracking down on them and trying to eliminate them...before the news would interview racers and get our side a little.. at least show our opinions but now they don't, all one side. they make it out to be just highschool kids and punks...well I know for a fact that its not true you have the older crowd like me and some of my friends, and then there are the really old guys like in there 40's. for us its still about cars and having a good time. and the sad fact is that the streets are really the only place here to run your cars..the closest track is over an hour away and not open to heads up racing or unsponsored racing events.. We do have a local shop that was running unsponsored races but they don't happen often enough to impact the street racing. nor are they at night when most happen.

these issues were brought up many times by street racers (including myself) and options were given to reduce dramatically the street racing..we were told that they were good ideas and they will see what can be done...what the city did was get grants to put more cops on overtime to bust our asses more and more....What is sad is that they can't understand as long as people have cars and like speed they will never stop street racing. They will slow it down but never stop it. They spent **** loads of cash to go after us (including using police helicopters, sherriff and high way pat. ) all that just to get us...I'm pretty sure that there are some real serious crimes being committed...like the serial rapist that wasn't caught...why not dump that man power into something like that?

Jedi 03-31-2004 06:51 PM

I agree the movie killed it for everyone. Suddenly you got a bunch of goofballs that enter the scene for "Ken doll" reasons. Because its "in", not because they have an intense love of motorvehicles. Its sad really. I mean hell. Look at your local parts store. I dont mean the real tuner shops. I mean Pep Boys, Schucks, even G.I. Joes and Walmart have shiny garbage for sale. That movie made it look like a majority of street racers had $120,000 cars with 3000 watt stereos.

IMO Every major city (if they had a lick of sense) should have a monitered track. It would cost less in the long run to upkeep and man than it would to keep up the useless attempts at busting morons that cant drive in the first place. The entrance fees could pay for insurance....... Hmmmmm........ https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

Who the hell am I kidding. I dont really care for drags anyway. You can make a Yugo go fast in a straight line.

Eyxom 04-15-2004 01:36 PM

I've ALWAYS loved cars. Ever since I was little. I remember "helping" my dad change his oil in his truck when I was 4 or 5, and him teaching me how motors work.

I agree though... There are a lot of "2 fast and 2 furious for you" posers out in the world since the movie. A lot of people think they'll be able to touch a spanish girl's boob if they drive a red Integra with a yellow spooge decal. There are WAY too many people that're in it for the wrong reasons now-a-days. Though boobs are always a bonus. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

And forget about the cops in South Florida. Ever since the movie, they've been super **** about everything. Especially the night 2 Fast 2 Furious came out. Jesus Christ, that was a sad night in the history of the police force. Pulling people over in cars that even resemble ricey, for anything they possibly could. All night, all you saw were flashing lights and Hondas on the side of the road. Cops with tread meters and bull **** like that. It was really stupid...

sphinx munkey 04-18-2004 02:11 PM

face it, no 'old car' was fast, the sports version of those cars stock ran 17s this is 60-mid 80s they are old, slow and now the base model of almost every car could keep up with them if not beat them...

todays sports cars run 12-14 where back then it was 15-18 i mean damn there isn't a comparison... technology has increased, and it is gooood https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

cripsr6 04-25-2004 11:23 AM

I used to be into Hondas, which I find a lot of people saying, but not the muffler only, washer lights, stickered out kind. I despised that and the fact that I was always offered parts for real cheap https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif wink wink. I also didnt like the fact that I had to be paranoid of who knew what motor/ mods i had. I knew people that would bring their ecu's in at night! A lot of bad karma as i saw it.When i went to go see it in the theater there were kids neutral dropping their mother's buick centuries, and all kinds of dumb ****. Of course I was egged on to rip my car or whatever so i crept at about 20 miles an hour leaving the theater. There is a time and a place for everything. I deffinitley saw the difference at the spots i used to frequent after "the movie".

I knew at this point it was all down hill. Sure enough the places i used to go to were swamped with "party poopers" in cars, and even helicopters in a few cases. So i sold my crx on ebay and was done with it. Now i just bought an fd, and when its running don't know how things are going to be. I guess I'll just have to take the ride to Englishtown.

You need to read up on these older cars. The GTO ran 13s stock. And how about Shelby, the cobra and GT500 an GT350 were badass cars. And the classic corvetes were nothing to laugh at either.

You should just not post at all you'd look alot smarter https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

~offers plate of crow~ The others speak truth man... This makes me question whether you even have respect for the hot rods of the golden days, denying these cars had balls and scooted displays a complete lack of respect of heritage.. without those cars, we wouldn't have the new golden age in sports cars we do nowadays... Oh yah.. And if anything.. I give props to the crazy old fucks back then running those times on bias-ply radial tires that were NOWHERE near as thick or sticky as factory rubber coming on sports cars nowadays.

Forgive me I got a bit caught up in the thread I forgot which forum section I was in.. Welcome to NP diggity dot com yo... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

haha yeah i fremember premeir night, my friend ben and i were going to see the fast and the furious, well i rode with him in his heavily modded fd.....we had no problems getting there, and right after the movie on the 5 mile drive back to his house we got revved at on every single light....the movie made having a nice, rare, fast car a pain...everyone and their mom was revving that night, anything from jeep wranglers, to oldsmobiles, alot of riced civics and the occasional mustang gt...
