from sunny cali (silicon valley) and was wondering which year engine/model to look out for and which to avoid when ur as green as me? Horse in my stable is a 1967 ford mustang fastback and my daily driver is 1999 toyota solara v6. want something different to wrench on. Welcome to nopistons! Each engine/generation has its own strengths and weaknesses, it's best to read up in the different sections. Don't be afraid to post questions in any of the sections as well, we'd rather have a well-informed rotary owner, rather than someone who buys it, blows it up, then complains about it.

the 81 thru 85 12A cars have ignition and carb improvements over earlier years

the 84 & 85 13B is fuel injected and is a great engine

What generation are you looking for (assuming it's RX-7)?



S1 (Series 1) 79-80

Standard 12A carbed engine w/ 4-barrel carb and vacuum secondaries. Standalone Oil Cooler under radiator. Coarse-threaded brake line fittings. Single-dizzy with points. Thermal Reactor in Exhaust

S - base

GS - Power windows, remote hatch popper (iffy)

GSL - rear disc brakes, sunroof



* leather, power steering, and sunroof available as separate items





S2 81-83.5

Gauges revised - slightly better, brake fittings are fine thread. Ignitor pickups for electronic ignition added. Catalytic Converter

GSL got a LSD in the diff





S3 83.5-85

New interior, Beehive oil cooler that uses coolant to cool oil, bigger spindle bearings bearings and splines for rear

GSL-SE added to product line - EFI 13B, vented rear discs, shorter rear, taller 5th gear, 1 less LSD clutch, unique wheel bolt pattern, 4-circuit OMP
